A few weeks ago, I went to Dixie Gun Works and bought a Uberti Replica of a Colt Walker. A HUGE revolver. I shot it with the beginning load of 20 Grs of FFFg black powder. It was VERY accurate at 25 yards, shooting a three inch group, but I felt that the recoil was far too light to be as legendary as I have heard that it was. The next loading I used was 30 Grs of FFFg. It actually shot higher than the light loads, just as accurate, but the power factor was lacking. Does anyone have any experience with these? PLEASE come forth and share the info. I want a load that will knock me out of a saddle if I get a horse..................Kingpin

    • The data in the above table was taken from the Colt Black Powder Instruction Manual.
    • Only FFFg BLACK POWDER may be used in these or similar percussion revolvers.
    • .36 and .44 caliber revolvers use #11 percussion caps.  (.31 caliber revolvers use #10 percussion caps.)
    • DO NOT USE SMOKELESS POWDER in any blackpowder firearm.  Use of smokeless powder in a blackpowder firearm may cause it to explode and may cause severe injury.

The data on http://www.uberti.com/firearms/walker.php would suggest above data could be close.

I just ordered a .44 cal 1851 navy.  I've seen conflicting reports, some same brass framed, need less powder, some say replicas are stronger, so use same charge.  I figured, I start at 25gr and work up.

Brass frame would be weaker than Steel frame....1851 Colt Navy original caliber is really .36....not .44....gun should have come with makers recommendations for loads ie amount of BP, maybe even what granulation, cap size and ball size....& how to load etc.
from table above

1851 Navy
.36 (.372-.378 inch dia.)
15 grains
18 grains
20 grains
ENJOY!
