Do any of you guys have any experience with the Hornady XTP on big game? What about the Speer Gold Dot? I want to get some loads up for my .45 LC that can take down game.

Hey NH  >>  Not tested on game, but have used the 300 gr. XTP MAG in my .454 Casull since I got the thing.  They are accurate but in a soft medium (soaked newspaper), I've had those things turn inside out.  The Super RedHawk's starting things out at 1600+ fps for reference.  Core / jacket separation was expereinced on numerous occasion.  Personally, I'd never use them on game.  Not saying they wouldn't work, but not for me.  Once I get my latest batch burnt up with the XTP's, that will be the last I use them.

The Gold Dots are supposed to be a bonded core bullet, I believe.  Again, not used on game, but "bonded" certainly can't be a bad thing when you're looking to have a bullet hold together while penetrating flesh and bone.

You might also consider cast bullets.  I'd imagine a heavy, hard cast of one flavor or another would offer quite a smack in your .45.  This is the direction I'm going with both my Casull and .44 RemMag.  I've ordered a box of 270 gr. bullets for the .44 and the 395's for the .454 from Cast Performance.  Should be here within the week.  Doubt development will start till next spring but that's where I'm headed with these revolvers.  Anyway, another option to consider.  Good luck.  >>  klallen

Hey Klallen, I was looking around Hornady's site and they have 300 grain XTP MAGs for higher velocities, i.e. .454 Casull. I also found out that, at higher pressures for use only in Blackhawks and T/C's, you can get the .45 LC to higher velocities and energies than the .44 Mag . Just check out Buffalo Bore ammo . I imagine that Buffalo's ammo kicks fiercely out of a handgun.

You can't drive the 300 grain XTP Mag fast enough for proper expansion out of a .45 Colt.

A good hardcast LBT or Keith-style bullet is good for big game. 300 to 325 grains gives quite a thump, although I know a feller who uses Keith-style 250 grain bullets for wild boar with good results (meaning dead boar).

I think cast bullets of 250-270 grains in the .45 Colt are as good as it gets for deer bullets.AW

I have used both the XTP and the Gold Dot on deer out of various .44 mag handguns....I prefer the Gold Dot, as it holds together better and penetrates deeper......now, the XTP killed quite well also.......but I much prefer the added penetration of the Gold Dot....a critter shot clean thru both lungs equals a sure, clean kill..........

One thing to be careful of, is to make sure that your cast bullets are gas checked if you plan to drive them at higher than normal velocities. Plain lead bullets have a tendency to leave your bore slightly soldered. You won't notice it at first, and it may be too late when you do. Some will recommend that you shoot some jacketed bullets to clean it out, but in some cases, the pressure spike will be painful and in some cases, deadly. I use the most unrecommended method to remove lead build up that there is and it works like a wet dream. I'd tell you all about it, but the EPA would knock my door down if they got wind.................Kingpin

My dad bid on some .45 LC dies last night on Ebay. His max bid was 31.99, the price of new ones. If I get that than i will buy some of those Cast Performance bullets, some Hornady 300 grainers, and maybe some Gold Dots. I want a load inbetween the factory loads and the .44 Mag power loads. I want a load where i can still manage the recoil, but it is effective on whitetails and boar.

Yahoo!!! He won the dies. He will make payment as soon as the guy sends him an email showing the shipping cost. I will be ordering my bullets and powder shortly. Now all I need is to figure out what powder i want. Hmmmmm. Anyone know of a good one? I am looking for a 1000-1100 FPS velocity. I dont want one at the level of .44 Mag, but i dont want factory either. Any suggestions?
