I'm bringing this subject up again.

Aint none of us getting any younger. If we have interest in getting together for a hog hunt I'm thinking we should be talking about it.

Last time we talked about it someone mentioned Texas,  Oklahoma, and a few other states. That seems like a reasonable drive for some of us and just like at MYGAWDS anyone flying would have many offers to help with getting picked up etc.

What do you guys think? I am in whenever or wherever.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

D,
We might not have  to drive far to shoot hogs in the near future according to this article.

I don't know much about setting something like this up but I can start with a google search and see where that takes me.

What states or area would you guys be interested in going?

Already have one planned out for next summer. Got a buddy in Hawaii with a major piggy problem. He shot around 30 last summer in his yard. That place is polluted with them and they want rid of them. AR-10, count me in!

When I have been looking on the 'putter about all I find are high fence hunts.
And most of them charge by the number and size of the pig you want to shoot.
I under stand most hunting is around feeders, that's a hard pill for me to swallow.
If your having a problem with pigs why do you feed them and make them fat and happy to stay and cause a problem? AND why do they charge me 300 bucks per pig, to fly out and shoot there problem.
Sorry just my rant.
I still want to shoot some...Ouch
There has to be some place for us to shot/hunt them I'll keep looking too.
Texas or Arkansas are probably our closest options.
Maybe California But I hear there smaller pigs, How about like Georgia, or the Carolinas, Florida?
That makes it almost like a hunt in Hawaii.

Any one know what constitutes a Trophy hog?
Do you think there is a processor that will freeze and ship Hogs? I think a swamp buggy hunt would be great fun. I'M NOT going to go after a knife and spear. Lodge, Motel, Transportation, All in price?.Approve

The only one I have found so far that is actually free range hunting that's not over a feeder is Prone Outfitters.

Pretty expensive but they have no limits or extra charges for trophy hogs. They do night hunts and will rent thermal gear or you can bring your own. Renting theirs is expensive too.

Their are some places that are cheaper but most of them limit you to one or two hogs a day and are over feeders. I assume they are high fence ranches but I'm not 100% sure.

We should think:
how many hogs do you want to shoot?
how many do you want as food take home?

Prone outfitters are night hunts only???  stalking in a line thru wheat fields.

More thoughts on hunting wild hogs,  especially for folks that have not done so.

Both male and female pigs has tusks.
Hogs get big and 300 pounds isn't uncommon.
Big pigs over 150# are usually not good to eat.
Female pigs usually have a brood of 6-12 piglets with them, I don't shoot if they are still suckling size.
Hogs have great sense of smell and poor eyesight.  They are not blind but poor.  Smell is equal to or better than black bears; and WAY better than any deer.  so wind is a factor, as is body odor, where hog are being hunted heavily.  they are smart.

Hunting from a blind over corn/bait along a creek/river is great.  Hog generally run the watercourses, like to roll in mud!    you can get to see deer/turkey/birds and lots  of critters.  so sitting isn't boaring (pun intended).

Hogs tend to be nocturnal, so early morning and evening are the best times.  I've hunted them at night in fields, but not as much fun for me.  Also, I like to realy pick my shots, and not have to rush, so daylight is my preference.

hope we can get something together.

More thoughts on hog hunting...with a pistol.

Only killed a few hog with a pistol, 41 mag, 44 mag, and 375 win.  all had good shot placement.

375 win shot was quartering away at 55 yards uphill.  Hit behind the last rib thru heart out front opposite shoulder.  Hog stopped for one second then fell down and rolled to bottom of hill...tenderizing.  Would not have tried that with 44 mag.  375 was a 270 grain tough bullet (made for cape buffalo).

Well it would be an interesting hunt for those of us who never did that. Not excited about the high fence places or even over baited sets. Be nice to find guides if needed to go on free range hunts in states that have lots of public land. Private land hunts will be expensive no doubt.
Would it be worth it to check if AZ has hogs, they have thousands of acres public lands. They have small animals kinda like hogs javalinas. There is a season on them.

In Arizona, hog hunting is only allowed on private land with written permission from the landowner. Hogs may also be hunted with a valid hunting license on certain public lands managed by the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD). It is illegal to shoot hogs from a vehicle, including off-road vehicles, or to spotlight hogs at night.
What is the best state for hunting hogs?

Where is the best Feral hog hunting?

  • South Carolina.
  • Oklahoma.
  • Alabama.
  • Arkansas.
  • Louisiana.
  • Georgia.
  • Florida.
  • Texas. It shouldn’t be a surprise, but Texas by far tops this list of the best states to hunt hogs in the United States.  Texas only has 4.2% of public land.

yuo, looks like d got it right.
  • State: Montana
  • Website: http://fwp.mt.gov/
  • Feral Hunting: No – there is currently no viable feral hog population and Montana is considered a hog-free state. In 2015 Democratic Senator Cliff Larsen introduced Bill 100 in the Senate Committee on Agriculture that would ban the possession and hunting of wild hogs in the state.
some more info for hog hunting in various states, check link for any state of interest for regs.

https://www.hogmanoutdoors.com/regulations

example of one states feral hog regulations
  • State: Georgia
  • Website: http://www.gohuntgeorgia.com/
  • Feral Hunting: Yes; learn more about Georgia’s feral hog population here.
  • Hunting Licenses:
    • Resident: A hunting license for hunting wild hog is required, and can be bought for $10.
    • Non Resident: $100 for an annual combination hunting and fishing license ($20 for a 3-day trip combination license). No general hunting license is available for non-residents.
  • Hog Hunting Season: Feral hogs can hunted year-round on private land. On WMAs hogs can be taken during most hunting seasons, but the type of hunting allowed is contingent on the season (for example, during deer season hogs can only be taken with deer weapons).
  • Night Hunting: Only on private land
  • Baiting: Only on private land
  • Limit: No bag limit
