I'm still trapping.  Got a nice 35# beaver yesterday.  Weather was beautiful, just a flannel shirt to walk my trapline.  2 hours to skin; sure wish the fingers could move like they did 45 years ago.

But I carry a J. Stevens Bicycle pistol as my finisher.  It is  a 100 year old single shot 22.  Just saw that they are now selling for  over $600.  I don't have a holster for it and figure I might just loos it  while climbing thru brush.

Now, I think I need a new trapping pistol.  In my state auto are not legal to hunt with, so I need a light weight single shot or a revolver.  Alloy frame for weight and to avoid rust.  3-4 inch barrel.

Any thoughts?

North American Arms

http://www.northamericanarms.com/lrifle.html

Have one as a back up carry piece. Small compact and believe it or not accurate. Mine folds into the handle to form a self contained revolver.

Second choice. Ruger bearcat.

Used the Bearcats are running  $450 and up...WOW for a gun that sold for $49 originally.  That is too much collector value for me.

The NAA looks good and the MSRP is $229.

Do you know if it comes with a longer barrel.  like 3,5 inches??

I need to make eye shots at about 6-9 foot.  I use 22 shorts and the toughest things are beavers as they ar usually standing in the water, after having wrapped the drowning chain around a log, etc.  And I don't like getting in deep mud with a 30+ pound rodent.

Foxes are easy (can actually just use a club).  Coyotes are easy if they are short chained.  But I like to do eye shots to not damage the  hides/pelts.

MM have you tried the 22 for accuracy?  only one sight?

Bear;

I'd be checkin' out more than the retail stores or the on-line sales points.  I'm thinkin' that I've seen Bearcats fairly recently for far less than $450.00, but that's around here.

i would think a single six would be about right. an accurate gun w/ better sights than a bearcat. not a collector piece, or premium on the price... nothing wrong w/ a bearcat... not as easy for me to shoot, but i do lack coordination...

New stainless lists for $540  Blued have some model discontinued but shows a list of $501.

I'll be checking the best prices at some of the bigger discount gun shops here.  Even at $450 that is a fairly expensive gun.

Bear I have shot a lot of rounds through my NAA 5/8" pocket gun, and it is a very accurate gun for what it is.

My friend John (local police chief) Made me marvel at how accurate it was one day. He hit a 10" square hanging steel plate four out of five times at 100 yards with mine. But he is an exeptional handgun shot. Me I missed it five for five.

They do offer it in a longer barrel too. 6" if memory serves me right. Had one in my hand, but have never shot one. They have a larger grip for it too.

Tikka I like that one very much.Never seen one before.

Bear the only problem with the NAA is you have to pull the pin and remove the cylinder to reload. Just thought you should know that.

I don't even carry my trapping gun loaded.  Trapped critters can be seen far enough aways for me to load, even pulling the pin.  Live critters, I actually approach them slowly talking soft, to get very close.  Same for accidental catches, like dogs of foxes out of season, I don't want to alarm or panic them.  Actually, this year I trapped 'otes in an area with a very large male bobcat (and I didn't draw a bobcat permit).  I was concerned how to get a bobcat out of my trap if he got caught.  Never had to use the plastic tarp and blanket I carried in the car for that purpose.

The 6 inch barrel on that mini revolver would be perfect, improve my sight radius.  Couldn't find them on line, maybe at a gun show?

That Taurus is a heavier double action, sort of a copy of my model 17 smith.  Not a light carry for me, but a pleasant plinker for the range.

Bear the other cool thing about the NAA is you can rest the hammer between cylinders in notches they made in the cylinder. It can't fire till you cock it! Would have been a great option on SAA's of old no more reason for  the old empty hole.

Bear, I believe they are.  Mine is marked Spanish Fork, UT.  I have the Black Widow, larger rubber grips and a 2" barrel in .22LR.  I know I can't make an eye shot with it at the 6-9' range your talking about though.  I'd vote for the Single Six.  Good Luck 788

Not sure I could make that shot either. But with the longer barrel model that has real sights. I bet you could. In the right hands they are plenty accurate. As I said above my buddy John can shoot the crap out of mine.

My had to be sent in for work once. No fault of the gun, and they fixed it no ?s asked and no cost! They are great folks to work with. Turn around was about 2 weeks!

That Mini-Master with adjustable sights and the folding holster at $355 just about looks like exactly what I need.  A little more $ than I'l like to spend, but.  Have to shop the gun Show tomorrow, about 500 tables....maybe I can make someone an offer they can't refuse!!!

Bear, if it were me, I would buy a Chipmonk rifle. It's light, small enough to pack, and who knows, someday you will have a grandson to give it to. Just a thought.........................Kingpin

Good thought.  A little more bulky than I want, but has the accuracy, and as you say....could become an heirloom.

Still would require me to get my son thinking of something beside intrigue and handguns.
