Just got back from shooting my Birthday present from my wife, a 14 inch T/C barrel in 30-30 AI, with 125gr bullets and a full house load its pretty nice, with 150gr full house Ackley loads it makes your right hand feel funky real quick, not tingly just a sudden sensation of extreme fatigue.... I love it.

Sounds great. i like the shorter barrels. What grip you got? I hunt mine adn usually carry it all day, seldom putting it in my shoulder holster. I have a set of very large walnut finger grooved grips, makes shooting and carrying it very comfortable (even after 10 hours), I shoot one frame that has a set of the Packmeyer recoil black rubber grips. Eats up lots of recoil. I shoot the .308 SS bullets in 130 grain. Use them on deer and varmints, get 2 inch groups at 100 yds from a rest. Good luck with the AI, you will like it. BEAR |

Hey Bear, I have Pachmeyer grips on mine, I cant say I dont holster mine cause I do quit a bit. I like the touch bit better ballistics from the longer barrels plus they seem to cut down on recoil some or FELT recoil, I hunt out of a climber stand that has a moveable gun rest that helps with the hold and if I have to shoot freehand I put a hand out on the forgrip as far as I can, BUT shooting a handgun while hunting I was taught by my dear old dad that if there was any kind of rest available to use it. I do. This years hunting has been real frustrating I have not seen anything but does, I had Five right under me last night could have spit on any of them, NO BUCKS yet and the rut has not started in the area where I hunt but the season does not end till Feb. 11th so I will keep after them, Rick

Good luck on the buck, Rick. I always carry a sand bag filled with walnut media and some sand (cuts the weight down from all sand). I hunt either tree stands or ground blinds, and always try to have a gun rail (PCV 1 /1/2 inch pipe). I did take a pure off hand shot (no tree around) and made a heart shot on a whitetail in heavy snow, 105 yards. Probably my best handgun kill (using the 375). Lots of fun to hunt and play with those Contenders. BEAR |

I have taken four deer at 200-230 yds with a 30-30 Contender and 130gr Hornady bullets. I use 3001 powder, Win brass and primers. I shoot over a decoy so I know exactly what the range is +/- 10 yds. When I was a kid all the old timers said the 30-30 was only good to 150yds, they were talkin out of their 1894's rifles. I'm here to say it is a very effective round with the right bullet to almost 230 yds and that is with a 14" barrel. People used to oooh and ahhhh about the destruction that the 5.56mm/.233 did on humans. I bet they'd be much more impressed by the mundane killing efficency of the 112 year old tirdy-tirdy if they saw the results side by side.... DD |

You are right DD. Funny how people compare "killing range of cartridges". I see lots of recommendations on the 44 handgun to 150 yards. I've killed deer with the 44 mag out to about 135 yards. But if you look at the bullet weight, velocity, energies at that range you will see the 30-30 is WAY more powerful. The game doesn't know the range (although it is an accuracy limit to the shooter), but it the energy is still there it is a killer. Same with the 357 mag, often touted as a worthless hunting cartridge as it is too big for small game and too light for deer. Out of the closed breech system of the T/C it is a good comparison with the 44 mag out of a wheel gun. I've not run the range chart recently but I think the smaller diameter with the 170grain out of the t/c actually over comes the 44 at some range. Considering my standard opinion that deer are really very easy to kill (if hit properly) the 30-30 and many others (25-35) etc..., care really very decent to hunt deer with. BEAR |

The Ackley barrel is a tack driver with 125 gr bullets and 34gr IMR4198, 14 inch barrel is clean as a whistle after 30 rounds and not any muzzle flash that my shooting partner could see sitting right beside me, I LIKE IT!!!!!! Bear I would be proud as hell of that shot too, I will shoot offhand if need be but if any rest is handy I am gonna use it. deaddog I agree with you 100%, what is considered a mediocre rifle round is one fine pistol round and I can tell you know the ballistics real well to take a deer at that range, tells me you shoot alot.
