After a very long wait I finally lucked into a real Colt Combat Commander in .45ACP. My very first 1911 was a Series '70 type brush nickel [looked stainless] Colt Combat Commander .45ACP. It went off in a trade before I really appreciated what I had. I've been on the hunt for another Combat Commander ever since. A 15 year quest has finally been fullfilled...
Last year, thinking that I'd never find a Colt I took a chance and purchased a Norinco compact which is a copy of the Colt Combat Commander. It shoots great but well... it's certainly no Colt. Guess it will be going on the market sometime down the road... Norinco Compact:

Does the Combat Commander have the aluminum frame. I can't remember. That would make a nice carry piece. It does look like a really nice pistol, and I'm sure it's a heck of a lot better than the Norinco. Who did the mod's to it? The trigger, sights, etc? Good buy NL. |

Seem to remember the Commander being the original aluminum alloy framed pistol. The Combat Commander had a steel frame, and at that point the Commander became known as the Lightweight Commander. Confusing enough?

Just had a conversation with a 1911 'smith yesterday. He said that the Norinco guns were actually quite good and virtually every part was fully interchangable with Colt. The grip screws and or grip screw bushings were the only parts he'd found a glitch on. When they first hit the states several years ago, they were dirt cheap; something on the order of $180.00 wholesale. The price kept climbing with every good test article printed. Bush I put an embargo on them that stands to this day (according to the 'smith). Good thing that embargo saved us from too many brand new utility grade .45's to be had on the cheap!

I carry a Combat Commander pretty much everyday. It is my "go to" gun for social purposes. I will suggest, if you plan on carrying this as a defensive firearm, and you aren't a lefty, get rid of the ambidextrous safety. Less is more with a Colt. Avoid full length recoil spring guides, and shock buffers on the Combat Commanders, also. For thier intended purpose, the extras take away from reliability. You have a trigger job done on this one, and that is the most important thing on a 1911 type pistol.

That sure is a nice pistol. I carry a 1911 A1 Combat elite. It has a stainless frame and a blue slide. I HAD a commander, but, traded it because I have more hand than gun. All my .45's are full sized. Also, for those who may be interested, I got a carbon fiber Blackhawk holster for my SIG the other day. It's got a great retention that releases with a button and the trigger finger. I mention this because they make them for the 1911's too. They won't break the bank at $45 and have an inside the pants hook and come with a belt system plate too that will accomodate any width belt that you can find. They sure are nice holsters. The model is a CQC (close quarters concealed). Their website is Blackhawk.com and they are EASY to deal with.............Kingpin

Haven't had a chance to try out the Colt yet... sold the Norinco, though. Got most of my $$ back out of it. I'm a leftie so the ambi safety suits me fine... Kingpin - Combat Elites look cool. I had one about 10 years ago. Another Colt I shouldn't have let slip me by...

Lucked out and found a Colt Combat Commander [Series '70 type] in 9mm. This one's virtually 'all stock'... Had to ad it to the 'stable', too.

Well, that is funny, because today i was at my favorite local gunshop
handling an Israeli copy of the Commander. Dang, that is a sweet little
gun. Only $350 and is in mint condition. I want to install an ambi
saftey and i even found an ambi mag release! Parts are interchangeable
with the 1911 as far as i can tell.

NH - Don't worry, I've been shooting 1911's for going on 25 years. Some of the later ones with ambi-safeties, as I too am a 'leftie'. While I prefer an ambi-safety I don't particularly find it a disadvantage without one either. But then again, I only shoot right handed bolt rifles, too.
