Hey Ed,

What's the peak fer yote pelts?  Nov, Dec - remember readin that they go out of prime in Jan.  That don't make a lot of sense to me cause it's so dang cold here in Jan, Feb, and even march.

Where's a good place to get hangers?  I'm use to the wire rat stretchers that adjust to fit their size.

What do you do to prep the fur, had a guy tell me the other day that they wash'em in a warshin machine!  Then hang them, blow dry and comb!  I'd get shot doing that in my wife's new machine - I ain't never done that sort of stuff before anywho?  What's the best practice to get top dollar fer pelts?

Early Dec -End of Jan is best, but they are huntable first of Nov out here. In Mid Feb they pair up to mate and start to rub or loose fur. Wire Fur Hangers can be picked up at most Trapping supply outlets, Fur Stretchers for Fox and Coyote should be made of wood 1x4" about 6 feet long, Coyote stretchers being somewhat larger than Fox of course. The best advice i could give on Fur Prep would be to pick up my Video, Hunting and Skinning for Profit, it covers it all, from skinning to washing and drying, Take er easy......Blaine

Blaine,

Just might know how to skin a bit after runnin a rat line that took 250 to 400 rats a year growning up.  Fact might know how to skin real good since i were a taxidermist - hell I can skin a bird without stretchin the skin, n that's a trick.

Anywho, talked to the local fur dealers, they said most the coyote are provided on the carcass (wierd) and they pay ten bucks, bobcat are 50.  He said if there done up nice the yotes go $15, and the cats up to 75.

Don't think i'll be killin yotes lest they're on my bird ground, but there i'll be doin it serious like.  Cat's fall inta the same, not gonna go lookin fer trouble, but if they wander in the wrong range I'll smoke em.

Think he'd give me anythin fer wild house cat's!  Usually, not a cold blooded type, but wild cat's and dog's are an exception fer me.  Now wild means more then a mile from the farm / house.

The Video Hunting and Skinning for Profit is much more involved than just teaching one how to skin properly, I averaged $38 on my Dogs last season using the methods in my Video, and I expect to pull an even higher average this year. Proper Fur Handling starts from when they hit the ground. Skinning is in fact a small part of the entire Fur Handling process. If your local buyers are only offering $15 for well handled Coyote Pelts they are robbing you FLAT! Bobcats on the UT sale last season averaged $270. I myself would be asking, how could your Fur be valued soooo much less?

Blaine,

Hmm, I knows about pluggin holes en such, what yer sayin don't mix with what the locals told me.  They said the dog's here are larger and worth more then what your shootin in NM.

Now ya got me wonderin - I'll check with the Fur Harvesters of KS and see what they gotta say bout it.  Hell if what yer sayin is right I'll buy two or three tapes so I can learn right.

Most of the Fur I harvest comes out of Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming, which are considered NorthWestern Heavy's, I believe out Kansas way Coyotes are probably a semi Heavy with some Flat items as well, which are not valued quite as high, however, $15 seems very low at todays market prices. The N.A.F.A sales are a good indicator of where things are at, Minus their commission which I believe may be as high as 11%. I spoke with a feller from Wichita Ks who told me he averaged $150 on his cats last year from a local buyer, If he's telling me straight that is.

Blaine,

Here's the link to the fur auctions from 2003 in KS with prices.

At looking at those cat prices the cats must be of a flatter grade than are the western types, as well as the Coyotes, I spoke with a friend of mine from southern Idaho yesterday, he stated to me that a well known buyer was going to be offering a $45 average on well put up (coyotes)Heavy goods this season in this region, I would imagine that would mean that the Northern Pales will be averaging in the mid $50's to low $60's this season, But, the overall average should also be better for semi's and flat grades as well, as 100% of all grades are moving well, Looking at the Coyote averages on the Kansas report for last year tells me that this season, Heavy Prime well handled goods out your way should pull an average of $30 or very near it. At least thats what I would be looking for...good luck!!!.....Blaine

Spot,.... Ther's some fur-buyers, what'll rob you blind if they git a chance,.... most often 'cause'a "lack of compitition" from other local buyers. Don't believe all ther cry'n, and whine'n,.... it's money in ther pocket if you sell cheap, and some of'em even consider it all "part of tha game". Blaine might even agree with me, when I say to expect lower "offers" for yore pelts from local buyers on an average.

I'd suggest join'n yore "state's trap'n association" for more information on buy'ers, and auctions.

rollingb is Spot-On (no pun intended). Knowing that your Fur has been handled well and harvested when Prime puts you on solid ground with the Buyers, They are much less likely to throw bullshit your way if you know what you have, like rollingb states they make their money by buying cheap and selling high. I usually end up with well over 100 pelts each season for the buyers to come bid on. I run a sealed bid operation here at my Fur Shed and if the highest bid doesnt meet my minimum, I dont sell! I know well how to grade Fur and I watch the Market indicators very close. Bottom line is that, if you have Heavy Prime, Well Handled Goods, you should demand top dollar for your Fur, that is, with respect to the region it was harvested from. This Season I am seriously considering shipping my goods on up to the N.A.F.A. Auctions in Feb. The Trapper Associations Auctions draw more buyers to look at and bid on your goods, putting the odds in your favor, and If your goods are Prime and Handling is second to none, Trust me, they will be looking extra close at your items.

I'm already hooked up with the Kansas Fur Harvester, but man are you guy's right.  Blaine, NAFA's got a tape on how ta grade yer fur's, might have to get it if you don't cover it in yours.

Looks like history does repeat itself!

Half agin theives these dealers are.  (spit)  I'm gonna go to the auction if I have anythin to deal.  Mostly just the yotes I clean up from the bird ground we hunt.

Hey, any you guy's got use fer rattlesnake skins'
