To me both are the same cartridge.

But, talking to a rep from a large barrel manufacturer, I said can you rebarrel to a 250-3000.  and for what reason he said.  "But we will only stamp the barrel 250 Savage, not 250-3000"

why??????????????Confused

Hmm. Interesting.

I had a Ruger and it was marked 250 Savage. 

My next door neighbor has a 99 Savage and it's marked 250-3000.

Maybe it's because it's easier to stamp "250 SAV" on the case head of the brass and if the rifle is stamped 250 Savage they will match. 
Hey, I've seen dumber things than that. LOL
