I am a big fan of Federal Match primers (210 standard and 215 mag). I have been using Federal primers for 8 years. My father has a rifle in .300 Weatherby that doesn't do well with Fed 215M primers. At the suggestion of a gunsmith that he knows, he tried Winchester mag rifle primers, and has been getting GREAT results. His gunsmith friend uses nothing but Win mag primers for his mag cartriges. My .338 seems to shoot better with Win mag rifle primers. Anyway, I ran out of Fed 215M mag primers yesterday (loading some .300 Win) and am thinking about using Win. mag primers on all of my cartridges where I would use a mag primer. Has anyone had the same experience with Win mag primers? |

The makers say their primers are all the same, supposedly, just better than the other guys. I've had excellent, consistent result from Winchester small rifle primers from the get-go. That said, I had a time when my BR would only shoot well with Federal match primers, now it does best with Wins again and just terrible with another lot of Fed match primers. So in my view, the primer thing is just like the bullet thing and the powder thing...it's all a crapshoot for the most part. Sometimes the "dice" roll good, and sometimes they don't. |

I once had a very good .270 load put together with Winchester mag primers and H450 powder. I think it was a good match. I've dabbled with the mag primer in my .348 with W760, but the jury is still out. I tend to think it's a crapshoot at times too.AW

I have used win primers in many cartridges. Also used mag LR primers in 243 to 416 Weatherby. But I was wrong. i only use the mag primers in 338 and bigger today, better accuracy from std LR primers in 300 win mag and smaller. Just my experience (I use the mag primers in the 300 Weatherby). BEAR |

Mag primers are made for slow burning, hard to ignite powders, and for cold weather shooting.

BEAR and waksupi... I was specifically asking about the "Winchester" brand of mag primer, not whether to use a standard vs mag primer. Maybe I misunderstood y'alls responses.

Moose I think the Winchester Brand of primers are very good. I've used a case or two over the years. But I sort of got onto CCI a few years ago when primers were scarce, and stuck there. BEAR |

i use win mag primers as a last resort. they seem to work ok, but i don't like the way they feel when i seat them. i've had such good experience w/ federal and cci that i try to go there first. |

Howdy Moose, I don't recall using any Win. Primers in my magnum cartridges. However, there are several standard calibers I use Win. primers in - 270, 30-06, etc. For my magnums, I've had good results with the Federal Gold Medal Match Primers. First batch I loaded in my 7 RUM Sendero went 5 shots in < 0.50 inch! Quite pleased and never switched. A few cents more than the regular stuff but they worked for me. |
