Topic: the blackhawk shoots! Posted: 09 August 2004 at 10:00
Yesterday was the first time i have had the chance to shoot the thing since i really cleaned it, and it shoots MUCH better. I think with some handloads it will shoot better. Those winchester 255 grain cowboy lead round noses aint exactly what i want to be using. I am thinking about Hornady 250 grain XTP's and some Win 249 or H110 will do the trick. Have it kick out at about 1000 or 1100 fps and it will do anything i need it to!

Glad to hear your blackhawk is doing better NH.
I've always had good luck with the XTP bullets in my 44's. Win 296 is my favorite pistol powder when making full power loads for the 44's.
On my 2 SAA type 45's I've been wanting to get some 255gr SWC hardcast bullets to try. I'm thinking they might give better accuracy than the old roundnose type I've been using.
Somebody better call the Secret Service. Let 'em know there's an illegal alien in the White House...and it ain't the cook!!

I need to tinker with my Smith 29 44 mag. I've only shot one deer with it and haven't done much with it since.
Maybe I'll have to try and squeeze it into my reloading schedule amongst the (2) 270's, the 7 STW, the 300 Wthby.........ahhhhh who knows when I'll get to it!
Good to know that there's recipes out there that work though

Oops, i guess i have been out of the circle for a little while, i meant win 296, not 249 . How i got that pistol powder mixed up with a squad automatic weapon is beyond me!

I like a 255 grain Lee cast from wheelweights and lubed with liquid Alox. My load is 19 grains of H4227, and I use that in both my Ruger Blackhawk and my Colt New Service.
That's plenty for whitetails. For serious purposes, I use Li'l Gun in the Blackhawk only.
