Fella's;

I recently got the monthly Midway flier & made a small order from it.  Among the things that caught my eye was a DeSantis pocket holster for just under $15.00.  I figured it's hard to go wrong at that price & ordered one.

It arrived this weekend & my initial impressions are mixed.  The idea is good, the soft nubby exterior does indeed hold the unit in the pocket when drawing the gun.  And it keeps the gun from printing rather well.  I mean, you can tell there's something in the pocket, but it could be anything.  The print doesn't scream "GUN"!!  The gun draw is another story.  How the holster is positioned in the pocket makes all the difference.  And a large part of that positioning is the shape of the pocket itself.  The denim jeans I first tried it with have a pocket that's deep enough to severely inhibit the draw.  If I were to know that these were the pants that I'd always be carrying this rig in, I'd probably sew up the bottom of the pocket & shorten it by about an inch.  As it is, the pocket is large enough to even let the holster cant, making it hard to get a repeatable sure grip on the gun.  It's possible that shortening the pocket might correct the situation, but it's also possible that the width of the pocket may need to be reduced.  Probably easier to find a different pair of jeans that the holster fits better.

OTOH, the pair of jeans I used were from a very well-known major player in the industry.  Which makes me wonder why DeSantis wouldn't size the holster to "the standard of the industry", ie. the Levi Jeans Company.  I'll try the holster in a few other brands & styles I've got & hope something matches better.  But if the holster wanders around in the pocket of a pair of Levi's, I'm not expecting to get warm fuzzies from anything else.  So, further testing will include Carhart, Arizona, and anything else I find that would be a semi-dress pant.

After all, I bought the holster to house my Ruger LCP rabid mouse gun.  You know, the kinda gun you carry to social occasions where you're definitely not expecting trouble, and concealment is more important than the howitzer factor.  Given that caveat, the holster works, but I'm not entirely happy.

CB, The fact that they are Levis is the problem. I'll not hijack this thread but will post in the politics forum. RD

900f,

I use an inside the waistband holster with a steel clip that kinda hooks your pants under your belt or over your belt. It conciels well under a jacket but not so good with a tucked in shirt.

I never did very well with a pocket holster for the same reasons you mentioned. Course, I carry a model 60 Smith. Its alot thicker than a LCP. Probably heavier too.

I will sometimes throw my S&W 37 into a DeSantis Nemisis. I like the holster for short periods of time. I am not fond of carrying anything in my pockets so I don't do it often.

I like the holster though, very grippy in the pocket and releases the gun easily.

I have just been carrying my LCP loose in my pocket, with a cold chamber. It has ridden there every day for the past 5 weeks, and the trigger hasn't been tripped yet, so I may change the cold chamber part. I can draw fast, and I am not too worried about printing. For the number of times my shirt has been pulled up with my Glock 19 in view and no one has noticed, I have realized most people are simply oblivious.

I carry 1911s, which can be heavy on the belt if you don't have good leather.  Now, for a .380, the High Noon Down Under (a good version of what Wing wears), is my preference.  The Milt Sparks VM2 or TT Gunleather IWB (basically the same holster) is as comfortable as it gets with a big auto.  It also holds close to the body so printing is non-existant.

Fella's;

As far as concealed carry for larger semi's goes, well, I've been carrying my H&K USPc in the same Milt Sparks Exec's Companion for around 12 years now.  Daily carry too.  It's about time to get a new holster, but it's such a hassle dealing with Sparks anymore.
