my wife's van is starting to get tired. probably has some more life left in it, but it is time to start thinking of another vehicle. we got a lightly used chrysler pacifica about a year ago. i got it to replace my truck, but w/ the understanding that when her van quit, she would take the pac and i would go get a truck - the truck prices where we lived were just out of line, but car prices were ok; thus, the reason her vehicle will be replaced w/ one for me... make sense? dunno... anyway, been kind of watching the used truck market around here, and found a couple possibilities i like; curious to your thoughts. i need either a truck or suv. i haven't looked real close at suv's, yet. i don't really need a full size truck, but i want a full size truck. wife is indifferent. anything i need a truck for can be accomplished w/ a dodge dakota sized pickup, but aesthetically, i like full size better. i'd pay a hefty mileage premium, though, w/ a hemi 1500 over a 6-cyl dakota. i rarely tow anything, but do occasionally put some weight in the box (seed, chemicals, rock, and bricks). ya think it is better to spend my time and energy shopping the compact truck market, or full size? gas prices are low now, and will probably remain that way for the next year, but in 2010... my guess is anything goes. mileage is a consideration, but not a major consideration. biggest 3 priorities are off road capability, durability, and agility... what'cha think? |

While I can only speak on GM and Ford products, as the only dodge I've ever owned a 79 van was a TPS, although I've heard pus are ok. You don't pay that much of a mileage penalty between a 1/2 ton full size pu or suv and a mid sized pu or suv. Just get one with a small V8 and keep your foot out of it and you get about same mileage. If you get 3/4 or 1 ton with a big V8 in it and haul a ton of stuff around all the time you'll notice it some. If you drive a stick it'll save you more fuel in a PU than in a car. Any decent light duty full size pu, with a small V8, driven reasonable will get better than 20 mpg. You'll only get one or two more mpg out of a mid sized and for that you give up a lot in the way of comfort and durability. I've had a few small or mid sized pu/suvs and they wear out at least twice as fast and are always uncomfortable to drive/ride in and I've never had one get over two mpg better than a full size one. I've had a couple bare bones 1/2 ton PUs, straight six and four or five speed. They last forever and are cheap to drive and comfortable. Just my thoughts, I'd go for the full size one. RC |

Dak; I'm not sure just what your total situation is, but here's a thought. Think of it as either a "hedge your bet", or "have your cake & eat it too" strategy. Get the full size pickup. They're cheap & loads of selection. You'll be able to get what you want, in the color you want, etc., at a bargain price. Bargain hard because you're also looking for an acceptable mileage-mobile. And that can be literally anything. Just throwing out some possibilities: Older Subaru wagon in good shape. Six cyl Camaro or Mustang fun-mobile. And my Camaro gets pretty good mpg. Check with BEAR about what his 6-cyl 'Stang gets. One of the itty-bitty 4WD's like the Suzuki whateveritis. Motorcycle maybe, don't know if you ride. There are a lot of possibilities if you keep an open mind about what's out there. I'm thinking the truck is actually a limited use vehicle. There's no substitute when you need it, but how often is that? So get a very affordable truck that's going to be a low-miles use vehicle, and then shop for a high mpg that's going to get driven. My personal vote is for a fun car like the Camaro. 900F |

Go for the full size 1/2 ton Chevy/Gm/Ford with the four doors and four wheel drive. I have/had all and would reccommend them highly. Like you I don't haul that much anymore, but with the right trailer I can still haul a 91hp John Deere 5525 (just watch the braking). They have plenty of room which is a requirement since I'm 6'7" 300lbs and enjoy hauling the girls with me to the feed/hardware/gun store. I don't need the 4wd but it sure is nice when you do and best of all the 4wd part does not depreciate in value when you sell it. My current Chevy is averaging about 16.5mpg total. BigAl |

DK Ya'all know I'm a Chevy guy through and through, probaly why the Nova is still my baby. As far as trucks go since 2000 I've had an 88 GMC it blew in 2002,I got it into a dealer on it's last leg, motor was shot. It was a Dodge dealer so I gave a 2002 Dodge Ram with the Off Road package a try, crank blew while it was still under warr. egg shapped jornels,10k miles later the trans started to go,so with less than 45k on it I got out from under it and went back to GMC with my 2000 4x4. One of my youngest sons buddys wanted the GMC bad and kept bugging me till I sold it to him. Gas prices started going up and I've had great luck with all my Toyota 4 Runners, they climbed like billy goats ,(I've had 2 1994's and one of them is still my hunting rig. Momma drives a 2004 and it's a dream, one of my sons out west had a Tacoma that has seen it fair share of wheeling and still goes from abuse to a city cruser like it's never been off road. All this just to sayI bought a 2006 Tacoma and couldn't be happier,I will go as far as to say it's the best truck I've ever owned and I've been driving and building cars and trucks since 1969.

Full size Chevy. I have a burb that I bought in '03 and it's in a class of it's own. A full size truck is great, but don't preppie it up with the extended cab or 4 doors with a 6' bed. If you do that you might as well buy a bus. Nothing quite says truck like an 8' fleetside. Who knows, you just might need to haul a piano someday................................Kingpin

In a year, gas prices will be where they were a year ago, or almost as high...figure atleast $2.50, if not $3.50 and the dems would "take those oil company profits" and use em for some such program...Hillary said it when she was campaigning, and it drew rave reviews (by other dems).
BHO will attempt the same...you bet ya. Reagon used to say that you can't tax the rich....meaning that if they do the above, then it will get passed on to you and you'll wish that gas was $4.00 a gallon, again. |

Mr Goodwrench for 20 years here. You will find that the GMC/Chevy mid sized suv's don't get enough better milage to warrent buying them over the full size SUV or truck. We sell both GMC/Chevy, and Ford new and used. If you let me know just what you are looking for I will have our sales staff keep an eye open for you. We are generaly cheaper than most places around here due to us haveing the biggest used car lot in Montana as part of our Taylor Family Auto group. We have several buyers that go to several auctions weekly all over the NW, and sometimes southern Auctions to. We have 15 car haulers bringing them in from all over all the time. Would be glad to help anyway I can. Word to the wise. Dodge suck after a short time. Great power train, but the rest of the truck falls a part!

Dakota, If it were me I would go with a 1/2 ton full size. I am a chevrolet guy. Mine is an 03 1500 Silverado. It gets around good in snow storms in town. I havn't had it out muddin or hunting yet cause I kept my old 1987 3/4 ton Chevrolet for any odd situations or hauling stuff. But I really like it. and it gets around 19 or 20 mpg on the highway and 15 or 16 in town. (I usually drive like a wildman) so I think most people could do better. Hope that helps. Wing master |

I've settled on keeping my 93 f150 around for the times I need to haul something or take it in the woods. It will fill that role for many more years to come. Daily driver vechicles are smaller higher milage cars. We do a lot of commuting so it only makes sense. I'd love a new truck but just can't justify it, especially in todays economy. The old truck is paid for, runs well and does everything I need it for. My work truck is a 94 Dodge Cummins 3/4 ton. It's been used and abused and keeps on ticking. I think the new dodges have moved past the old fall apart/ strong drive train rep about 15 years ago. They're not as refined as Chevy but sturdy. If money was no object a new Chevy duramax would be a no brainer, great truck but pricey. |

haven't sprung for the truck yet. local economy is starting sag, which makes me not excited about going very deep into debt (i'm willing to cover about 50% of the cost, but i'll need a loan for the other 50%). local vehicle dealers have inventories that are beginning to bloat, and the prices are getting more attractive all the time (one local dealer just took in a very, very nice '07 dodge hemi 1500 w/ 19,000 miles and hung a $16k tag on it today... could probably drive it out of there for 14.5 or so). however, as always, there's more to the story... i am working on a customer who happens to be a car dealer. i set him up with a real sweetheart deal, but we haven't signed papers yet. the potential customer is a factory dealer... so, if he signs my deal, i am kind of obligated to buy from him - or, at least give him first opportunity. the problem is, i don't like anything he has on the lot at the moment. when i talked to him today about what i was looking for, he advised me to wait on it a bit because the prices on trucks are dropping pretty fast. on monday we'll meet to go over my deal, and regardless of if he signs my deal or not, i think enough of him to just tell him what i am looking for and wait for him to find it for me. |

fantastic offer, al... i gotta decline though. have had a pretty bad run of luck w/ fords, and even though they might be in less than prime shape, i assure you me and fords get along so poorly i could make them worse in no time. sorry to hear about the boys, though - sounds like they got out ok, and am glad for that. |

I have had great luck with my 2004 Chevy 1500. I average about 17.5 to 18 mpg, mixed driving. I have put 12,000 miles on it since July, and haven't had any problems with it to speak of. I snapped it up when gas was in the high 3's for 8500, so I am still satisfied. I am a GM man to begin with, but Ford pickups are also nice. I would say if you are looking at 1500 lb payload (formerly 1/2 tons, but they can carry more than they used to), you aren't gaining anything from any of the manufacturers as far as useful work is concerned, and the GMs ride the best. I rode in a 2006 F-150 today and that thing rattled like a damned Harley at idle. I have never much liked Dodges, but you may have had different experiences than I.

You're gonna hear a bunch of stuff from a bunch of folks.
After all is said and done, It is gonna be YOUR vehicle for YOUR needs. Keep that in the front of your mind. Nobody else, including myself is going to make your payments. I'm in the same boat you are. My car is crappin out and I either buy a replacement now or at the end of the year, because I know that will have to. So. Looking at things logically , now is the time to buy. Buy at the end of the month when the sales quotas are due. Banks are dying to give you sweet deals to buy a vehicle. I hate picking up another payment, but my wife talks sense, We're going to have to anyway. Buy when prices are low. I'm thinking that after this summer/fall, that's when vehicle prices will bottom out (as far as retail is concerned!!!) and the if you shop around between now and then, make yourself a familiar face at the dealer, you might just pick up a cherry deal. I did that 2 years ago when I bought my wife her new GMC. She wanted a full size truck and nothing else. After all said and done, she got her dream truck, the salesman got his sale and commission, and I got the engine/rearend/price combo I wanted. Just using it as an example. Everyone involved wants to make a deal. Sounds like you want a full size truck. Buy it. You'll never have a better opportunity to get one than when the economy is tanking. That's what my wife tells me, but I keep resisting going to the car dealer. Maybe I should stop resisting. I hate my crappy car. Thanks for reading my vent. All done now.... :) |
