I finally was able to procure a 460 for a buddy of mine. It should arrive next week. It's going to end up costing him about $920 including tax. The usual scalping is going on with the new model. The cost is around 60-$70 more than a 500S&W. He already has dies and loaded ammo and is just waiting for the gun to arrive. I'll give my impressions on shooting it and comparisons to the 500 next week sometime.

local gun shop is billing this gun as a true-blue 200 yard revolver. i would certainly appreciate it if you guys would shoot it at 50, 100, and 200 yards, and report back how much drop there is... ie, is truly good for 200 yards? i have no doubt the energy is there, but what good is that if you have to hold over so much that the target isn't even in the bottom of the scope??

Hunting is not a matter of life or death; it is much more important than that.

Looking forward to your range report, DEADDOG.

From the very 1st article I read about the .460, my interest was peaked, not so much because of the cartridge (although it does look like one heck of a round) but more-so because of the bullets created for it.  I've concentrated on the "heavies" in my .454 Casull, but now with light bullets being made for the .460, designed to harness velocity and enhance down range trajectory, experimentation might be in order.  From the early data I've seen, it looks like the S&W is a good 250 +/- fps faster then the Casull.  So now I'm curious if 1900 + fps with the new 200 gr. Hornady SST bullet is actually possible in the .454 Casull.  I've never seen the BC of that 200 gr. SST published but toying with the numbers that Hornady gives for its factory load, it looks to be about .154, give or take a bit.  If I could get 1950 fps with it in the Casull, it's down-range trajectory would play out to something like 4" high at 100 yds., 6 1/2" load at 200.  Trajectory wise, you'd never have to hold off animal and even the Casull would be a true 200 yd. cartridge.  I just don't know if I like the 620 lbs. energy for the Casull or even the 800 lbs. energy for the S&W once it gets to an animal at that range.  Less energy will certainly kill, I guess.  Just seems a little light for me.

Anyway, can't wait to see some real-world results.  Good luck !!!  >>  klallen

I have it in hand, The major differences between it and my 500 are the comp. It has one like the stubby 500, a removable type. The front sight is a fiber optic green thing, My 500 has a normal ramp type. Then the cylinder looks like it has so much extra meat between the walls compared to the 500. I hear it can handle a .22-250 round? My buddy is comming over tomorrow "Fri" to pick it up. He says he has a 100 rounds of ammo so I hope we can get a handle on it.

He came over to test it out the other day and forgot the rings! He didn't want to blast off a bunch of expensive ammo without the scope on it. He did let me take the first and only shot of the day out of it. My impression from that one shot are that it does kick more than a .44 but less than a .454, and much less than my .500 S&W hand loads. I guess I'll have to wait another week to get more shots and and better test out of it.
