Topic: RUGER #1 in 405 Winchester? Posted: 20 July 2003 at 12:39 |
Hey guys,
Has anyone heard of, or seen one of these?? I saw an article in F&S the other day and they mentioned it. Sounds real nice. They(F&S) say that it is the stainless laminated version. That would be a fun one to have to go plinking with . Say put a 1.5-5x on her and go have fun. Anyone else think the 405 has some pluses?,,,,BH

Hi BEARHUNTER >> Did it look something like this? There's one over on GunBroker now just waiting for ya to snatch it up . I'd imagine that little sucker would be a bruiser when loaded up properly.
Isn't the .405 a cartridge that one of the past presidents used to great extent on his African hunts? Maybe I'm blowing steam on that one but I thought I remembered something to that effect. Anyway, pretty rifle. I do love the #1's. Chat with you later. >> klallen

Yep, TR used the Winchester .405 (the rifle was a Winchester Model 1895) in Africa. He wrote it was the "medicine" for lions. I have one of the new production 1895s and I think it is really cool.

Had to head to the "Cartridges of the World" to familiarize myself with this one a little more. Obsolete section, no less. Must be in the process of being reborn or something. Looks like the data given is for lever actions. I'd imagine that in a #1, you could spice things up a bit if need be.
Something else on the .412 diameter bullet. I only did a quick look through the last Midway this morning but came up with Woodleigh as the only one I found making a 300 gr. SN for the .405 Win. Would appear that bullet selection might be an issue with this one.?.?.?.? More searching could turn up more.
In the lever action, looks like it bests the .444 Marlin by a 100 fps or so. I just don't know if I'd call either of these African dangerous game cartridges. Closer range elk, bear it would probably work wonders. Just that bullet selection thing scares me.
Thanks CB, SLUGGO for the pres. confirmation. Good to see the ole memory bank isn't turning to mush just yet . >> klallen

Hey K:
According to his books TR shot all the Big 5 in Africa with the .405, except elephant.
Yep, I think reloading components and ammunition are kinda hard to come by for the .405. I could be wrong but I think Hornady is the only maker of ammunition; it's about $30.00 per box. It's kind of spendy, but oh well, I wanted the rifle. I wouldn't mind getting a Model 1895 in .30-'06 or .30-40 Krag. (oh they make it in your favorite .270, too).
I think the Model 1895 in .405 came out a couple of years ago and are still very tough to find. I looked for the right one for over a year. Cabela's told me they have 50 of them with deposits on 'em. If I was Winchester, I'd get that factory in Japan cranked up.
How's the .416 going?

There was a article in American Rifleman recently. I recall something about two different bullet sizes both used in .405's, past and present. Not sure though, but something to keep in mind.

Rob, I think you are right. FWIW, Chuck Hawks' website says it is .411 diameter.

It is possible to get Hornady brass, its running around $30.00 for a box of 50. RCBS makes the dies, they are Group F 3 die set selling for around $50.00 Hornady also makes a fine round flat nose bullet for the 405. The SAAMI spec for the 405 bullet is .411", All new chambering and barrels will be at that spec. The 1895 action is a very strong one as it is also chambered for the 30-06.
