What do you guys think of me getting like a replica of a Winchester model 1892 in .38-40 or .44-40, or maybe even .45 Colt, loading the case with black powder, and then going deer hunting with it. I would cast my own bullets, make my own lube, and use the real black powder in it. This would make for a helluvafun hunting gun. I read a couple articles on using this cartridge and its big bro the .44-40 on whitetails in maine and michigan in Gun Digest. In the 2003 GD there is an article about a guy doing this, and he did this because of an insperation from an article by McAffee (dont mind the spelling). This article inspired me so i think i am going to try it as soon as i get my muzzleloader and a shotgun.

I bought an original 1892 in .38WCF some years back.
Did some research, and found it was an 1892 production model with
English Proofs. Sure wish that rifle could talk! I load BP cartridges
for it, using Lyman's 175 grain bullet (don't remember the mold number),
about 36 grains FFFg, and SPG lube. Shoots a consistent
1185 to 1190 FPS, with about a 15 FPS deviation.
I've killed two whitetails with it, both small Texas bucks about 100-120
lbs. One was at 45 yards, the other at 60. Complete penetration on both,
both were down in 80 or 90 yards.
I say do it...you will have a lot of fun!

I will be happy as long as i can hunt like other people that have hunted the area before me, and want a weapon that can kill the game that i am persueing without putting them through too much pain. It is my responsibility to the game that i dont get a gut shot, and that i wait until i have a good shot opportunity. I let a deer go because i wasnt able to get a good enough shot last year, and if i had shot at it and shot it well than fine, it would be my first deer, but if it hadnt been a good shot, and i had a single shot rifle, i wouldnt have been able to get off a followup shot, and that would be unethical.

I have been looking around on www.gunbroker.com and i noticed they have a Navy Arms Sharps Carbine replica in .45-70. This thing would be awesome to have, and i wouldnt have to worry about kill power from a .38-40, .44-40, or .45 Colt.

I don't care for the 44-40. the case necks are weak for reloading, and I don't care for a cartridge that I can see the bullet flying pretty much every shot.

So you guys are against the .44-40 idea? I guess i will just use that money i was going to spend on the bcpr on that Savage 99 in .303 Savage and some extras i want to get for some other stuff.

NH_Hunter,.... I'm certainly no "fan" of tha 44-40.

Thet Navy Arms 45-70 carbine you mentioned in yore other post, wood make a dandy gun fer ya. Ya can load it with smokeless, or, blackpowder,....cast yore own bullets'n have'a good time.
I jest sold mine 'bout'a month ago, never wood'a parted with it 'cept I have others 'bout like it.

Very best regards!!

I have a BPCR, I shoot 535 Grain lead bullets thru it, most of the time. It has a trajectory that looks like a rainbow. But if you know what you're doing it will knock a deer on his butt at 500 yards. Not that I would shoot one that far. I don't seem to be able to find the picture of the BPCR, this is my 1886 in 45-70, I shoot 405's in this rifle. I will find the other picture and post it later.

Nice rolling block dan. I may just load up some .45-70 cases with some Hodgton 777 or Pyrodex. I may, in a couple of years, get a rifle in matching caliber with the  Ruger SA pistol i will be getting this summer, but i am not sure.

Actually its a John Moses Browning designed high wall action.

Here's a picture of my 219 Donaldson wasp, it has a Hart SS match grade 1-14 twist I have shot some 5 shot groups in the .160" That's around an eighth of an inch, one hole groups.
