Topic: Describe your dream rifle Posted: 23 June 2003 at 15:13 |
Been thinkin about this along time, as I get older I like the idea of gettin a real nice rifle to scratch up a bit and leave to some grandkid. Since I've got another 15 or so years for theirs any grandkids to think of I spend time thinkin about what the idea gun would be.
Needs a clip so I can load/unload quick and quiet like.
358 bore, with enough cartridge behind it to flatten a bear but not my shoulder.
Sturdy, dependable, steel, mid weight 7-8 lbs, with a 1.5 to 10x scope.
Thinkin about gettin a supergrade after the student loans are paid off, or maybe a tikka, or sako (never shot any of those).

For a dream rifle I shoot a bit higher. The pictures are large so I'll link it instead of post. I love this rifle but would get a different caliber along the lines of a .257 Roberts.

Wow, that sounds like: work overtime, get a 2nd and 3rd job, sell the pickup, sell the dog, divorce the wife, and maybe some other stuff for someone to afford that. Or they could just be rich.

I just thought up my own dream rifle. Not sure what caliber it should be, probably .25 - .30. Anyway, my requirements would allow for adjustable energy output from 500 ft/# to around 5000 ft/#? It will only drop about 2 inches out to 1000 yards, but at only around 2500 - 3000 fps. It should weigh about 3 lbs to make it easy to carry, but only have about 1# of recoil energy. It will also have a gyroscope built into the stock to aid offhand shots. Well, maybe even Satalitte guided bullets? Also, I think a 3-100 variable scope should work out well. Anything I missed?

You forgot that it has to group 2" out at 1000 yards, automatically lead running game, have very long barrel life, like 100,000 rounds or so, and be cheap to handload. Cases should be "perfect" so you don't have to prep them. Also it should be self-cleaning.

The first is
One of the few rifles ever made in the Ruger 21 North American Series, this
was built to honor the mountain lion. Engraving was done by Franz Marktl.
Franz has done several presentation rifles for Safari international over the years, and his work has been featured in many magazines. He is the only true Master Engraver from Austria in this country. His work is incredible. I've shared many (too many) beers with Franz over the years.
The secound is a miniature functioning Mauser by Monte Mandarino. The checkering is 48(!) lines to the inch. That is an ink pen below it for size scale. Monte's real forte is muzzleloaders, and if you can get your hands on a copy of the book, "Steel Canvas", his guns are featured on the overleafs, and in the body of the work. The last one I handled of his, made for Bob Lee, was a 1760 French fowler, chase emgraved from end to end on the barrel, with gold wire inlay and platinum the full length of the stock. Price? $227,000.
Unfortunately, Monte has quit building rifles, and is only doing restoration work now. And he's a young guy! To see him on the street, you would think he was a street person. And he's a hell of a good blues singer!

I looked at the photos first and was really impressed with the mauser, then saw the pen and thought what the hell had to go read the text! Very nice.

At first i thought that it meant that they made a really big pen, but that didnt have anything to do with a dream rifle...unless it was how your rifle looked in "transportation mode!" That would take away the worries of travel, it your rifle turned into a pen!

Good morning TIKKABUCK . . . everyone is chattin' about the .260 and the 6.5x55 on Shooters . . . like there is a big difference or something! Anyway . . . I posted the following this morning. Guess it explains what I want for an ultimate rifle.
"There is always an ultimate choice . . . for specific purposes. If I needed a long-range outfit . . . first, for antelope . . . second for targets . . . I selected this outfit a long time ago.
Tikka Sporter chambered in 6.5x55mm Leupold VX-II 6-18x40mm AO scope For normal hunting . . . Leupold VX-II 4-12x40mm AO
Now . . . I don't want to be rash . . . but, excepting HIGH MASTER and GAZ . . . I'd be ready to "take you on." Won't make any rash claims, but . . . get ready to treat me at the Outback! Could make DFC and his Sendero 'eat crow!' LOL!"
I would let him set at the same table . . . while eating his crow . . . as long as he kept his paws off my "Bloomin' Onion!" Of course, the .308 would be my "second" choice in chambering, but the above would suffice.
Have a good day!

Hey There Pocket
Wait till they try to buy over the counter ammo for out in the middle of no where.
I almost had my 788 truned into a .260 but this little 7mm-08 Tikka of the wifes is hard to beat. Light recoil plenty of energy and some reloading manuels put it a tad above the .308. Wooters had a Winchester Mod.88 in 7mm-08 that he talked alot about on his Texas hunts.
We'll see how it does this year.
