Topic: 338 Remington Ultramag. Posted: 23 June 2003 at 09:17
Greetings to all! I have recently acquired a Remington 700 in 338 Ultramag. Since I don't care much for the price of factory fodder, I would like some input from anyone who is already loading for this chambering. Bullet of choice will be the 250 Partition, Powders of interest are: H1000, Retumbo, H870 & H5010; Reloder 22 & 25; Vihtavuori N165 & 170; Norma MRP; Any experience you'd be willing to share would be greatly appreciated. The information from Powder/Bullet manufacturers is still pretty sparse. Thanks in advance. Regards, Eagleye.

Hi eagleye, sorry it took me awhile to find some blokes who shoot the 338 RUM.Here are some loads to try, usual caution about starting a couple of grains back and working up etc etc. These loads are from two different rifles both have 26 inch barrels.
250 grainers,90 grains of H1000 for 2850fps.(groups about.6)He claims that 95 grains will do 2920fps and groups .8.
The second bloke says use 200 grainers with 102 grains of H 1000 for 3200fps with groups under.5.For 250 grain projectiles he said 100/102 grains of H1000 for 3150fps(man that sounds a hot load)He did say be cautious as pressure may jump very quickly.
Neither bloke has had any luck with the Vihtavouri,Retumbo is not readily available down here yet. Both fellas said H4831SC gave the tighest groups in 180 and 200 grainers.
You and I are sitting on the same group size at 1000 yards.Has it been a windy year over there to keep your groups out this year.We have only had two still days for comps in the past six months.
Hope the loads are of some use.Have a good one macca.

Thanks Macca, for the info...I agree that the one 250 grain load appears hot! But I'm a cautious person, so will approach carefully.
NH_Hunter; The 338 Ultramag develops aroud 5000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, so it's not for the recoil-sensitive. It feels to me like a 340 Weatherby on steroids. Not a "bench" gun by any stretch of the imagination! However, it is not in the 378/460 Weatherby class for recoil. Regards, Eagleye

Hey EAGLEYE >> Neat cartridge. Interested to see how things turn out for ya. If you ever come up with a good explaination as to why they chose to shorten the case for the .338, and leave the 7mm, .308 and .375 all the longer typical RUM length, I'd sure love to hear it. Always thought that was a little hair-brained. Anyway, good luck to ya with the load development. >> klallen

They said it was shortened to accommodate the long bullets the 338 shoots and still fit in the magazine, or it was just too damn big for a common man to shoot?
