Hey Gang

   Got my barreled action back from Mark at Kaluia Custom today, 788 action with a 20" stainless barrel in 7mm-08,looks like a target crown on the barrel.

   Can't wait to get home and start bedding it into the stock,ohh so nice. Now I won't have to use Momma's 7mm-08.

Shorten the barrel on it, rechamber it to 8mm-08, through on a peep and front sight, shorten the butt stock just a tad, and then give it to me!

Tikka;

Does it have the bolt on the correct side of the action?  Which of the original 788 magazines are you using?

I just got my 788 back from the smith yesterday & am doing the same things.  Some clown, in the poor thing's past had taken a bandsaw & shortened the barrel by just whacking it off.  Didn't even get it at a 90 degree angle.  Consequently, I got it cheap, 'cause it wouldn't shoot.  Now it's got a target crown on an 18.5" barrel.  So gee, I've got to go to the range & find out what it will like.  Such a job!

Maybe eventually i might possibley find the place in the gun safe where i could have room for a Remington (shivers, sorry guys i am just not a Rem fan. And For everyone of you who buys a Remington, or anything other than a Ruger, you are taking food out of my mouth and clothes off my body.) I am pushing real hard to get short actions for all yall correct handed people out there. It may take until the m77k3 that is coming out in a few years cough. But i will win in the end, because i am just too stubborn to lose that fight.

Tikkabuck,

At Shooters I found Kailua's posts quite informative. He doesn't post on Shooters as before in the categories that I like to still read. Maybe he needs a nudge. I wasn't the most popular guy there, but he would be a shoe-in here.

NH_Hunter

Ruger M77s(all needing a little work for better accuracy) have been my favorite since 1969. The first one ser no 21XX in 243W was the most accurate rifle I ever owned. My son has owned it for several years now. It loved 43.3 g IMR 4350 with a Sierra Spitzer flat base. I still have several M77's in the safe. I bought a Rem VSSF in 220 Swift a few years back. It needed work on it to get it up to snuff w/the Rugers - Shilen trigger and glass bedding. Latest is a M70 Compact that I still have to do further work on - if I ever get around to it. I have yet to find a new off-the shelf rifle that couldn't be made into a better shooter w/o a little rework. When you think about it - the price of a new Win M70 compared to $139.XX in 1962, the lesser quality fit especially of action to stock is nothing. Run of the mill rifles are still a bargain. Computer controlled metal shaping, less labor intensive, is still good. In the old days rifles were mfr's with true gunsmiths.

I better stop. I'm starting to babble again, Gene

Hey

  It's on the correct side for me I'm a right handed shooter. When I got this in .243 it was in BBAADD shape one of those that was never cleaned after shooting or boat paddling or digging post holes.A smith here in town got it cleaned up and shooting for me,just wanted somthing different with a 20" tube. Maybe doing the same thing with a .270 Mark X interarms if this works out.Wheres my saw.LOL
