Being the curious type I've tried to see how far an arrow will fly.  I'm using some aluminum with field tips.   I know. They'll get bent and tweaked.  That's ok.  I have some set aside just for this little bit of fun.

I've been able to get them out to almost 150 yards.  And this bow is only 28lbs.   Just how far will an arrow go from a heavier bow?  Something like a 65lb recurve.  Or a higher weight compound.

Just curious.

I use to shoot a 65# recurve in the 1960s.  I also shot in competition with lighter bows.  but each year the club I belonged to use to have a picnic and a"pumpkin shoot".  We would shoot a round of golf with the bows and then shoot closest to a pumpkin usually placed 175 -225 yds out.  the technique was everyone got 5 arrows.  Most folks picked a cloud and aimed at their cloud and adjust on each shot to "walk it in".  I think a 65# recurve would go at least 250 yds.

Two years ago I shot a coon out of a tree with my crossbow, Horton Legend SL, using a carbon arrow with a target point.  The arrow went thru and still traveled over 140 yds.  I wasn't trying for distance and was shooting at about a a 70 degree angle, at a 50 degree angle I'm sure it would have gone further.

In a vacuum a 45 degree angle will maximize your range, but with air drag I think 55 degrees gives the max distance.

gunrunner: how far??? how about how far and hit what you are trying to hit????   i will only shoot about 30 yds.. now the kids are diffrent. nathan has hit a little bird in the chest at 77 yds with his. the little thing never knew what hit him. timmy has shot tree rats from the stand at 20 yds. and the oldest has shot at deer at 37 yds. we hung paper in the tree where we found the arrow. my buddy said what a shot. him or i would never had taken that shot threw the brush. then nathan gets up in the stand with a judo tip and picks the paper off the branch...

while they were building the new water tower in town i use to try and hit the top with my bow.  at 70 #'s i never hit the top.

mrmom, at least you tried to hit the top of the water tank, and not the bottom.    lol.    I don't ever want to get in a bow and arrow shootin' match with your kids.  I'll be limiting myself to some real close shots when I start to hunt.  Maybe 15 to 20 yards.

What got me curious about this stuff in the first place is the CA DFG regulation says a bow must shoot a legal hunting arrow at least 130 yards horizontal.   Even though I found that my bow will easily go that far, (even one with a broadhead attached), there's no way that I'd use a 28# bow to hunt deer.

I did find that I like watching those arrows sail up and up, and then start their quick descent.   Kind of hard to find many areas that I can try this at.  I like the idea of the contests Bear spoke of.

My 55# Recurve will shoot a huning wight arrow to an avrage of 353 yards. But I only shoot at animals out to 30yards. The arrow weighs 780grains witch is a very heavy arrow.
