Well the new coils helped some... but the problem was still there. The mechanic was really ripping his hair out. He was really trying to find the problem but couldn't find anything. Then he noticed the bottom cyclinder was flooding out. How strange. He had already rebuilt my carbs once, so he looked at them again. No problem. Timing was fine. What in the heck is the problem? He decided to check the fuel pump. It looked good too. Well to heck with this, he called Mercury to get their input. He walked through the whole breakdown with Merc on the phone. Merc went through the checklist with my mechanic. They come down to the fule pump. The mechanic says that everything looks good. Then Merc asks about the secondary pulse on the pump...................... the what??? Apparently (and I'm telling y'all this the best I can, I'm gonna have to see it to understand it) the fuel pump gets a primary pulse from the middle cylinder and a secondary from the bottom cylinder. The seal on the secondary pulse was leaking gas into the bottom cylinder intermitantly. AH HAAAA!!!! I think they found it. $10 for a new fuel pump re-build kit. Should be finished Wed........ I'll let y'all know how she turns out. Meanwhile, I'm stuck at home watching T.V. instead of chasing stripers at sunset!!!!

moose: i will try to talk slow???? the bigger motors , like the 60 hp.. i was told when you are going full blast everything is working the way it should. but when you go to troll or run slow that only 1 carb works??? at least thaqt is what i was told 1 time.. i think i got my motor problem fixed. i got some stuff called max 40?? you add it to the gas. i even put some in the truck. i let this stuff sit in the tank for a week and and pumped it into the carbs. it started on the 2 nd pull. try to start a 40 hp with a rope.... man it smoked for about 1/2 an hour, then it smoothed right out and run fine... to bad its time to go hunting......

I had a twin cylinder merc outboard for about 20 years. Always ran great and started at the touch of the key. I always ran the engine out of gas by pulling the fuel line off. the disconnect of fuel let the lines and carbs drain, so that no varnish built up in the engine. I still do that with my big engines at the end of the season. In the south the season slowly closes, so engines don't always get the recommended engine shut-down process. I run a 100 gallon of gas in the tanks so I don't use Sta-Bil any longer. I just top of the tank and put some tape on the vent. I store my boat in the off-season in an underground limestone mine, about 1/2 mile underground, temp stays constant 53 degrees but the humidity is dry. I put it down there Sunday....miss her already BEAR |
