    Posted: 24 March 2013 at 05:26

Locally and nationally I hear lots of people changing laws and making sure they can carry CCW when hunting.  I always thought I was safest when hunting in the field.  With my senses heightened by the hunt and looking for game, never thought a 2 footed varmint could sneak up on me.  I don't fall asleep against a tree trunk when hunting.

When I was young and stupid, I did carry a short barrel revolver for a "finisher" when hunting.  but I grew out of that phase; now I shoot straight and kill with the first shot  and if needed finish the animal with my rifle.

So I just don't see the need for CCW when hunting.  Am I missing something?

I certainly see a possible need for a CCW when backpacking, especially over night.  but hunting????

Bear;

All sorts of reasons to carry a pistol while hunting.  Ursus Horribilis being one of them in this part of the country.  Then if a second, finisher, shot is needed, well centerfire costs how much more than one round of .22 rimfire?  Although that may not make much of a case these days.

Nonetheless, when big game hunting I pretty much always have some sort of pistol with me too.

In Wyoming it is not nessassary to change the concealed carry laws. Here you don't have to ask the government for permission to carry a gun to defend yourself.

I carry a concealed firearm about 98% of the time that I am away from my house.

When Big game hunting I almost always carry a hand gun. Since my new found love for revolvers, it usually is either a S&W model 18 .22 long rifle, or a model 27 .357 Magnum.

I don't worry too much about two legged threats while hunting, but I have shot a porkeypine and a couple of skunks while hunting big game.

In parts of the country, you have the danger of running into crooks, doing bad things.  In the past, people have stumbled onto smuggling, grow, or cook operations.  It's too cold up here for the growers, outside of greenhouses, but cooks have used remote spots, to do their business.  There is fair amount of traffic, across northern border also, it used to be booze, now it's weed from BC.

here in WI a ccw would be necessary if you carried even just a Handgun when big game hunting..no long gun....cuz if your hunting coat covered the holstered handgun it would not be legal for hunting UNLESS you had a ccw.  A legal hunting handgun still cannot be "concealed" when hunting even if it is "accidentally" covered by your long hunting coat. Also, you cannot use a  .22 rimfire to dispatch wounded Big Game animal in WI.  It must be a centerfire of a bore size/bbl length allowed.

Guess I'm just an old fart.

carrying a pistol adds some fun when big game hunting...but  to me my rifle is 100 times better protection than a pistol.  So since I have a rifle no other miniature firearm is required.  And when I hunt with a pistol,,, that is more powerful than any 3 CCW.

Interesting that no one tried to justify or rationalize the extra weight;  Yet I always see threads "What is the lightest rifle under 6# that I can buy?"

When in Alaska hunting bear and moose...I always carry my 416 on night and day trips to the loo/lue.

I personally, don't carry a pistol when hunting but do open carry a 22LR when fishing or camping.  Sometime I'm hunting and camping.

     I like hunting with handguns! I always carry my glock 20 on my hip and have kill deer when my shotgun wasn't accessable. I got a 6 pointer last year with my 480 ruger. I reload my 10mm and find it to be cheaper to do finishing shots with it, slugs are 3 bucks each, and as Irish bird dog stated 22 is not legal and rifles are not legal here in southern Minnesota when hunting the only big game we have (deer).

     When I deer hunt I usually carry my shotgun, a revolver in a bandolier holster and I have my pistol on my hip. I have a tent blind that I setup in and make my self at home.

Dad, you are an armored transport in the woods.

My son hunted with me last year in North Carolina using his 270.  Most shoots are about 90-120 yards from box blinds.  But a large dow was traveling around the side of his blind...so he took it with his S&W 657.  One shot no running one butchered 100# of venison.

Right now thinking of taking my 30 Herret with 10" barrel to Montana (MYGAWDS)  for an 'ote hunting we might do!

I carry all the time but have questioned the logic if I am carrying a rifle. I mean, if you can't stop a charging bear with a rifle, why use the handgun unless it's to use on yourself. As far as needing "just in case insurance" I also slip two extra rifle rounds in my boot top.............................Kingpin

I carried a handgun while hunting for a few years until I
figured out I did not want the extra weight. One shell to
finish off an animal is way lighter to carry than a
handgun. When I am not hunting I carry a handgun all the
time because I am not carrying all my hunting gear.

Fella's;

My rational for having a pistol on me when hunting is that around here bears have learned that that single rifle shot is a dinner bell.  If your up to your elbows in guts and the rifle is eight feet away, it's nice to have a stopper on your hip.

Sadly, no CCW in Canuckistan.

The grub mint will let you carry your .300. Win Mag in the bush but no
.44 Mag on your hip.
