Well, though I don't have any picture capability yet just thought I'd share a few words of my latest range outing.

I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12 ga. magnum that came with a smooth top (no vent rib) full choke 30 inch barrel.  I have since added a invector barrel with vent rib as well as a fully rifled cantilever barrel.

These results were from the fully rifled cantilever slug barrel.

I started out with some el cheapo brand aluminum rings as they were the only ones I had at the time and I was anxious to mount my scope.  I bought a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9X with the thought that it would work great for a slug gun and should I ever decide to rid myself of the scope it would be an easier sell for a rifleman.  For $154 out the door it was a pretty good bargain NIB.  I mounted the good scope in the el cheapo mounts and boresighted and headed off to the range.  Long story short, I bottomed out of my elevation adjustment.  I just couldn't hit paper at 100 yards with the rig.  Pissed, hot and wondering what to do next I resorted to tearing the thing apart, tossing the rings into the trash and proceed to buy some new ones.

I ended up settling on some Millet angle-loc mounts for a weaver slot system.  This was exactly what was required as the weaver style mounts are the only ones that will work on the cantilever slotted bar.  After being confused as to how to adjust for more elevation (give me more adjustment to raise the slug impact up) I settled on the low mounts for $22.  I then went to the range mounted as prescribed and fired away using three different brands of discount slugs (Lightfield, Remington Copper Solids and BRI sabots).  I was right on the money!  I had to make some adjustment but I was glad that I went with the low mounts to get more adjustment.  (Remembering that a steel stock shim under the front scope mount of a rifle would add MOA adjustment, I was all confused what to do as you couldn't do this with a slotted base).  I shot some pretty good groups at 100 yards right around Remington's advertised 3 inches.  I'll have to clean the barrel and fire for accuracy for a few different brands of slugs but I'm impressed.  I'll add more specific review info as it comes to light and hopefully some pics!

Delighted with having new adjustment in elevation capabilities, I headed over to the range this past weekend and gave a few cranks out the rifled tube and came up with the groups below.  Velocity was right around 1475 fps average slightly higher than posted by the mfr.!  Yes yes they werne't bullseyes but I didn't adjust the groups for bullseye, just to test accuracy and so long as they were hitting paper, I was happy (for the time being until I find what it likes to eat best).

So here's what Lightfield Slugs 2 3/4 inch "white box" do at 100 yards

Are the lightfields also sabots? If not you can get some severe leading problems from rifled type slugs in a fully rifled barrel. Then they really screw up your sabots. You might already know that but I thought I'd ask. BTW did I read in a post way back that you had something to do with Dairy Farming? RD

Thanks Rocky,

Yep, the Lightfields as were all the slugs I tested, were sabots.

Nope I ain't into dairy farming.  My grandfather did before I was born but when he passed away so did the business.

I'll be getting some pics up soon I hope next free breath I get from work!

Mountaineer,

That 3 inches at 100 yds sounds good to me for slugs.  My slug killed deer has all been under 50 yards, because of the brush and terain were I hunt slugs.

If I need rifle accuracy only a rifles will do.  I really like the 870 with canteliver R barrel.  I'm sort of hooked on 20 guage for deer, but I have both 12 and 20 guage 870s.  Might need to get me one of them barrels!

I bought a Rem rifled barrel for both my 1100 and my 870 with a cantilever scope base. I scoped them both with 4X Leupolds and shot them both inat 100 yds. They shoot very well with the copper solids for me, making 3" groups and some smaller. Now, if I only hunted deer with a shotgun, I would have it whipped for sure. Just a dyed in the wool rifle hunter I guess. The only reason I bought them was because I got a deal on them. They DO work well though..........................Kingpin

Anyone interested in buying a Rem. 870, .12ga fully rifled, 24in.barrel w/ cantalever mount with a Tasco Bantam 1.5 x 4.5 Pro Point scope already mounted. Shot 8 or 10 times. Barrel made by Ithica... My degenerative dics disease has gotten to the point where I really have to be carefull of recoil. Both barrel and scope are in excellent cond.
