Next Deer Gun

Well I'm tired of driving for a day and 1/2 to hunt deer with a rifle.  I can hunt many more days, including weekend seasons at home, with a slug gun.  I've been looking at the 870 and the BPS and the Benelli Nova.  The BPS seems to fit best, although I like the price of the 870 much better.  Do you guys have any thoughts?

I use my bird gun with a slug choke and shoot out to 100 . great combo. I use tru-ball slugs in 2 3/4 .

I've killed some deer with the 870.  My brother has an 879 rifled with scope and got a deer with it last year.  My Nephew has the Benelli.  All seem to work.

A thought You only need one shot, the single shots are just a good a killer for deer, maybe better...............Because the scope/sights ate fixed to the barrel.  For a slug gun the barrel should be fixed to the action or a bridge/cantilever extending from the barrel with a scope rail.  I have a SS H&R hammer 20 ga break action.  With a 4x scope it shoots as good as the rifled barrel models and it only cost me $50 in a pawn shop,  I tapped it and put a Bushnell on it.  It carries light and I doubt I have $150 in it.  Kills whitetails dead and weighs probably 5#.

In NY I'm required to hunt with a shotgun, no rifles.  In the county where I live, required to hunt with a shotgun, no rifles, but here I have the option to hunt  with a flintlock or a crossbow in that season.

The only thing is with a shotgun 50 yards is really the max range, so you have to adjust your hunting style and pass up the gimme 120yard rifle shots.  And the deer know it!

there are rumors out "there" that todays shotguns with todays ammo and bbls can shoot to 100+ with accuracy......I don't use 'em for deer hunting so I can't vouch for that.....

For our NY hunt we sighted in from a bench 6 shotguns, Autos pumps and bolts, some rifled some smooth bore.  None would group 5 shots in 10 inches at 100 yards, and that is from the bench.

I'd not shoot a 100 yards with a rifle that could only do 10 inches, so I'd not shoot a shotgun that far.

At the range, there are lots of guns with the latest rifled scope sighted shotguns, all brands.  I see a few that from a bench can shoot 3 shot into 3 inches at 50 yards.  This is from a bench and with only 3 shots.  Never saw a 100 yard group with 10 shots on the paper, shooting from a bench with sandbags.

Some of the problems are poor triggers, slow moving heavy bullets so recoil is while the bullet is still in the barrel, and heavy recoil which effect many shooters.

I've killed deer with my light weight 20 gage at 65 yards.  The shells have MORE that sufficient power, just not accurate weapons.  I'm sure there are a few hunters who can shoot 100 yard groups, but they are really far and few between.
