I think that we should forget all that "PRACTICAL" 12 guage garbage. Guns should have a soul, and be appreciated for what they remind us of.... I vote for the Winchester Model 50, 20 guage automatic, modified. Why? My dad took it in on trade in a car deal and gave it to me for my 14th birthday. I was restricted to 3 shots of modified 20 guage, but nobody told me it wouldn't kill everything I hunted. I hunted every day after school and all weekend. Southeast Alabama had plenty of squirrel, quail, dove and rabbits in the late 60's. After the tornado got a neighbor's bird pen, we had quail out the wazoo and even a bunch of pheasant. I grew up, started reading what the "experts" had to say, and moved on to the "practical" 12 guage pump. I didn't kill any more game, but I was ready! Some time ago, I had the Winchester barrel shortened and a Poly choke and vent rib installed. It shoots even better now. I think that it's time to go back to the "good old days", at least in my mind. |

I love my poly chokes. No tubes to carry and lose, or just misplace in the house. No wrench needed. And at a twist in the field you got all chokes. BEAR |

I'm brand new here but because I enjoy bird hunting above any other type of hunting I've decided to make my #1 post here.
My favorite upland bird gun (grouse and woodcock) is an old Parker VH 16ga SXS. It's light, well built and shoulders like a dream. Even at the tender age of 76 years old it's preforms better than most of the new stuff. My other field gun in a 12ga Citori O/U. Grade III, I use this for late season pheasants, sharptail and hun's . Much heavier than the Parker but well built and a good looking gun where ever she goes. I love 16 ga shotguns, there is just something special about that gauge, |

Welcome JBMi, Nice to read your #1 post. A fair number of bird hunters here, and we need some more. Your right about the 16 being special, I've got 3 of them. In the old days they use to scale the 16 guage actions smaller specifically for the shell smaller than the 12. Later they seemed to make the 16s on the same frame as the 12s, so they lost something in handling. Folks also got magnumitis (even shotgunners) and that sort of killed the 16ga. I've never hunted anything that a 12 2/4 couldn't kill, or for that matter a 16, or a 20 guage. I bust a lot of pheasants every year with low brass 16 and 20 ga. I see that Remington now has a 16 guage 870 wingmaster! Welcome aboard. BEAR |
