I attended the Dallas Safari Club show yesterday and picked up the new Ruger 2009 catalog. Looking through it this morning, I was thrilled to see the new Left Hand Short Action offerings for 2009: .204 Ruger .223 Rem. .22-250 Rem. .243 Win. 7MM-08 Rem. .308 Win. Needless to say, I am thrilled. |

Fella's; Hmmm, all short action. I wonder what's up with that? Perhaps we'll see another list out of standard length actions? Next year all long actions? I can't see them losing sales for the .30-06 & all the other standard action rounds. 900F Edited by CB900F |

CB, The short actions are in addition to their normal offering. The total offering in the Hawkeye standard stock and blue receiver/barrel is: 204, 223, 22-250, 243, 25-06, 270, 7mm-08, 7mm mag, 308, 30-06 & 300 win mag. There's a stainless laminate offering also but in limited calibers. |

I saw the announcement on their website. Even if the actions look ugly with that crappy finish on the bolt, I will probably still pick up a .223 and a 7mm-08 when I get a chance.

Let's hope they look decent. I'd like to have 2-3 myself. |

Everything looks decent except the bolt. They have a nice matte blue finish on the barrels and the action, the wood looks great, and has a great profile, but they use a gray finish on the stainless bolt (same one they used on the all-weather Red Label shotguns), that really detracts from the overall look the rifle. It isn't horrible, and I can understand the utility of it, but it really does hurt it.

I just wish Ruger would have kept the tang safety.

I actually prefer the 3-pos Winchester style safety. It allows you to lock the bolt (I use that when the rifle is slung), unlock the bolt, but still have the rifle unable to fire (to a point, of course), which I use when the rifle is in my hands or when loading/unloading, and fire. With the old tang style safeties, they either locked the bolt, or didn't allow for bolt locking, which is less safe for loading/unloading for the former, and makes it easier for the bolt to accidentally open. The Hawkeyes, however, do not cycle anywhere near as smooth as the mkIIs did. I talked to a local gunsmith about that last night and he gave me some ideas, and I guess Ruger's accountants are winning the battle with the shooting guys again, so the quality is going down some.
I still may get one in .204, .223, or .22-250, but that is down the pike a bit further. |
