Topic: Hunting Clothing Posted: 13 July 2003 at 13:36 |
Hey guys, what do you where hunting? I usually wear, during the fall, a tee shirt, long underwear top, flannel shirt, NATO pants, long underwear bottoms, and a Winchester bird hunting vest. If it is a little colder, then i switch over to my wool hunting vest or add on another insulated shirt. When it really gets cold or snows, i switch over to wool. I wear: tee shirt, long underwear top, long underwear bottoms, two pair of wool socks, an insulated shirt, a flannel shirt, a wool hunting vest, a wool coat and some Kamik Pac boots. O yeah, during the fall i wear a regular blaze orange baseball hat and during the winter a wool hat with ear flaps . For fall footwear i usually wear one pair of hybrid wool socks and LL Bean Maine Hunting Shoes.

Lose the T-shirt. cotton keeps to much moisture in it.

I don't have the mony to just throw all my wool away and buy that hi-techy fleece stuff.
Besides, I like tradition. Wool clothes for cold, leather for my tack. Don't like all that rubber and nylon you see today.

Wool is also really quite, unlike some of that nylon stuff, and it is comfortable. Just make sure you wear something under it it could become painfull if you dont.

I wear wool against my skin too. The way I got it figgered, wearing clothing under wool reduces wool's great attributes. You'll be warmer without any under lining. If you sweat, you'll still be comfortable (won't get too cold) with wool. Wool nutralizes odors too, an underrated benefit for hunting.
If you don't like the feel of wool against you, try merino wool.... it's as comfy as cotton next to your skin. Filson makes excellent merino wool socks and long johns. If you've ever worn them when it's cold, you'll never settle for the latest high-tech fad.

Thoros socks are the best check out thier web. site. As for boots try workboots .com "Vibergs"
Pants I have several.. fleece in warmer weather add longjohns...patagonia in colder weather.
In real cold got the woolies, top and bottom....got dry skin so no wool next to my skin....really like some of the new tech. first layer...ie poly propylene. Silk aint to bad but $$
All in all I layer up and down according to conditions..kinda prefer pullovers as my huntin partners hate the noisy zippers.

I went the high tech Capiliene/polypropylene route for years. Danged if I'm not back to wool. You just can't beat it. I wear the merino wool (Smartwool (TM) makes some really nice longjohns) and it is more comfy, warmer (and cooler) than the high tech stuff. I'm born again...
Two of the worst features of the high tech stuff is that it stinks like hell after the first day and if the weather warms up or you gotta hustle like hell around that hill you'll dang near get heatstroke. The wool is warmer when it is cool and cooler when it is warm. Wear it all week and people will still come up and talk to you. Hell, carrion eaters were following me around in polypropylene!

Good to see all you boys keeping me in a job producing that good merino wool.Seriously if anyone suffers itch from wool try the sports wool gear for your t shirt or boxers,it is reversed twist yarn that basically removes the short fibres which stick into you and cause the prickle.I wear it or the blended wool as my under gear while i am working.Quality counts so buy the merino gear.Have a good one, the sheep sheperd,Macca.

I wear silk or wool/poly blend long johns. I wear Army surplus wool pants because I'm tough on hems in the woods and they are cheap to replace. I wear some kind of flannel shirt and a Filson or SwanDri wool coat.
