Getting that time of year again and thinkin about changing up some line. I used to be heavy into it and faithfully changed up my line every other year. Been three now and I guess I better do it. I started out on mono and then switched to braid about twenty five years ago. What say you guys on whats best?

Mono can be better for some things...braid for others.

Braid is thinner and cast further, I keep 18# on all my spinning reels, works from trout to sharks.

For trolling I line mono, it stretches much more.  this keeps pressure in fish while the boat is moving and fish swimming, few lost fish.

Older reels like Mitchel 300 do NOT work well with braid.  The clearance between the spool and frame will cause line intrusion  (mess).

Reguardless of what line, I use a leader of Flourocarbon mone next to the lure/bait.  Muskies 60#  36 inches, bass 14' of 8# Fl mono.

thin braided line will add 50% longer casts on spinning gear.

We did the "wire" when it first came out. Very strong.
Problems? It's very strong, With kids it ends up in the trees, over phone wires, bridge supports and anchored to boulders on the bottom of the river... Have to hook it to the bumper of your truck to pull it off or brake it. In windy conditions the line is so light when cast, more line goes sideways then forward. Fast forward.
We use it on our trolling poles and snagging poles. Mono on walleye poles, braided has no stretch and very easy to rip the hook out on walleye.Trout you can use anything, trout are stupid. Now the new spinning poles and reels have HARD eyes and rub points, the old stuff would get cut by the wire. Better yes but yes they both have there place. I know you should change them both but I almost never do. Normally I lose enough line to have to replace it Periodically anyway.

I get lots of years out of mono...because My boat has a cabin and rods when are not in use they are store in there,   NO SUNLIGHT.

Braided will fray easily on rocky, lure hooks etc.  after 3-4 years, I add back yards lost to fill the spool; THEN reverse the line so the new stuff that was burried deep in the spool is now on top.  Cheap german guy methode.

Is the fluorocarbon really better then the mono? or the braid?

My rod is an old spidey combo and it stays in my truck pretty much 9 months at a time. Much like a truck gun. It's a break down jobby that works well for just about anything up to muskie….not that I ever hook em. never know when the opportunity to toss in at a hole will surprise you. Even those quick throws under a bridge while shopping is being done, Dr. appt.s, etc.

Flurcarbon is a type of monofilament.  But it has light qualities that make it invisible in water.  It makes a good leader, as fish can't see it.

But it is more brittle than regular mono like stren.  So it breaks easier.  I only use it for short leader lengths.
