Great subject line, huh?

What I would like to know for those of you that like big bores, what is your favorite big bores? What calibers do you have? Say from .358 and up. Me, I like the .375 H&H but prefer the .375 Weatherby Magnum. The .416 Rigby is a great cartridge, will almost copy the .416 Weatherby and will do it at lower pressures. Same to be said about the .450 Rigby when comparing it to the .460 Weatherby. But for out an out shear fun my favorite big bore is my .450 Marlin. In either my Ruger No. 1 or my Win. M70 it’s accurate and a blast to shoot. Lawdog

OMG IT WONT LET ME MAKE THE FONT SIZE LARGER!!! But anywayz, i like the .444 Marlin and the .45-70. You cant say that i cant say that because those are big bores. I also like the .44 Magnum in a rifle. All of these in rifles of course.

Hey Law:

Uhh, let's see:

.35 Whelen (does that count?) (rifle: Remington)

.375 H&H (rifle: Winchester)

.405 Winchester (rifle: Winchester)

.416 Rigby (rifle: CZ)

.45-70 Gov't (rifle: Marlin)

As for a favorite, wow, I couldn't say.  Each one has so much tradition and history.  It's funny to set a .17 HMR up next to the Rigby.  A Winchester Model 70 in .450 Marlin??  That is cool!

The problem with the rat race is, even if you win, you are still a rat.

I found out you can stick a loaded .30-30 cartridge inside of a .416 rigby empty. The only part the of .30-30 that is outside the case is the rim that is barely on top.  I bet you could drop the .17 HMR in completely. A Bolt action in .450 marlin does sound kind of cool. It would be awesome in a Ruger m77!

Suppose my favorite big bore is a #1 in .416 RemMag cause that's what I've got right now.  Ruger Super RedHawk .454 Casull, for the same reason.

Would certainly like to add others.  A #1 in .458 Lott would be nice.  A #1 in .470 Capstick.  .50 PeaceKeeper.  One of S&W's new .500 magnums.

"I bet you could drop the .17 HMR in completely."  Hey NH, you can completely put a .17 HMR cartridge in any .284 class cartridge with an inside case length of  1 3/8" or longer.  The HMR case rim is just a smidge to large to fit into .277, but .284 and up you can drop the little sucker right in  ;o)  .

This one wouldn't be a bad either.  Build it on a BMG bolt action.  Sweet !!!  That's the .17 HMR to the left and the 7.82 Warbird to the right.

Later.  >>  klallen

Fella's;

As a, hopefully, interesting sidenote, I did the side by side comparison thing tonight at the dinner table for Ai.  I put the .22lr next to a .50BMG.  Boy did her eyes get big.

Klallen;  That's a 577 Tyrannasaur isn't it?  I've heard that it generates over 100 ft lbs or free recoil energy, do you know if that's correct?  Thanks,

900F

Howdy CB  >>  Threw these #'s into a recoil calculator for the .577 Tyrannosaur.  750 gr. solid, 175 grs. of powder (actually takes more but I settles on this) and 2400 fps (again, faster is possible but I settled).

In a 9 lb. rifle, recoil would be 242 ft. lbs.  In a 13 lb. rifle, 168 ft. lbs. and in an 18 lb. rifle, 121 ft. lbs.  Of course, things can be done to lessen this punishment but, either way you doctor up your rifle, muzzle brakes, butt pads, mercury recoil suppressors, weight, you're still gonna get whacked around pretty darn good  ;o)  .

The one on the right is the .577 Tyrannosaur.  On the left is the .470 Nitro Express.  Middle one (from the post above) is a .700 Nitro Express. Chat with ya later.    >>  klallen

Hey klallen, how much did that .577 Tyrannosaur cartridge cost you? It looks awefully expensive. The other two i know are expensive. The .470 in a factory load by federal is 200 bucks per 20.

NH  >>  I paid $25 dollars for the .577.  Being the cartridge I've always wanted to start this little big bore collection with, cost wasn't an issue (within reason, of course).  Fella who sold it to me said that his cases are fireformed in an A-Square Hannibal (sp) rifle.  Spent primer still intact.  He neck sized and crimped the 730 gr. flat nose solid that you see into place.  I'm just fascinated that there are fellas that actually pull the trigger on things like this.  Now I'm looking for a .500 Jeffery, .505 Gibbs & .600 NE.  The .585 Nyati and other wildcat and proprietary stuff I want might be a little harder to come by.  The search is on.  Later.  >>  klallen
