Ok, got 4 days of bear hunting, blackie.
I've packed my 4 lunches, sardines and apples!!! now I need to decide upon gun??? got 20+ that would do. But got it down to 3 Kimber ultra light 6.5-308 123 gr bullets CZ/Brno double rifle in 8x57JSR 186 gr Cz 550Fs Mannlicher with set triggers 286 hollow pointed bullets. all are sub MOA. weight might be a factor as I pulled my lower back this morning. If back doesn't get somewhat better by tomorrow, then maybe a TC in 30 herret, 44 mag or 375. opinions wanted |

Kimber ultra light 6.5-308 123 gr bullets
Is that the same as a creed? Josie uses the same bullet in her Grendel. I never thought of it as a bear gun, but if'n you got a prefect shot under a 100 I guess it would work. I'm all for light, your 8mm would certainty be plenty of gun but an extra barrel sucks for us old guys. Your 44 mag or 375 may be fun even if your back gets better... ![]() Cz 550Fs Mannlicher with set triggers 286 hollow pointed bullets. What chambering is this one, heavy I bet what ever it is.

Light is good, but also must drop in its tracks.
Both the 8x57R and the 9.3x62 have killed black bears. Yep, the 9.3x62 is heavy....but it is a good friend, kiled dear, bear, and elk...all one shot, only a black bear ran 40 yards with a heart shot. Since I posted, I blew out my back (picking up a pair of socks from the bedroom floor. So right now I'm thinking of packing a Contender pistol and one rifle in the car. Let back decide, each day. This is a concurrent season, doe deer and black bear, and the area I hunt is good for both. But we can't bait bears so I will be still hunting hoping someone kicks one up and they usually run for 20-30 minutes. this is going to be a mountain forest hunt; but some 150+yd logging road shots are possible. |

I like the idea of the Contender with a backup in the car. I'd go with the 6.5-08 for a backup. The only difference is I like 140's in a 6.5.

Walked a couple of miles each day and sat some. Back kept loosening up, not bad now.
took the 6.5 and the T/c. Also took a cz452 22lr for mid day squirrels, sunny and 70+ brought out lots of tree rats. mostly hunted the 6.5

I've never hunted bear but I would think the 6.5 at 2800-2900 fps would be about perfect.

Bear vary in size/weight. I've seen 600+ black bears (sows). I try to not shoot sows and cubs. Most of my bears seem to be 4 years old and weigh 300#.
The 6.5-08 is fine with good shot placement, especially on a 300# bear. But I'd like a little more bullet on a BIG one. My 8x57R double rifle is about perfect. But it is getting heavy to carry in the field, especially with my back being out.

carried the lightest, 6.5. With contender in shoulder holster, in car!
No bear sighted, even with sardine sandwiches for lunch. Leaving thursday for 4 day Black bear hunt in NY. back is good, might take either the double 2-7 leupold on it. or might take the Win m71 in 348 with open sights. new plastic eyes seem to be ok for open sight, after 30 years!
