these scenes have been painted since the days of bodmer, but here are some modern paintings.
the gal's name is brenda hermundstad yirsa, and her website is www.yirsa.com. this is the junction of the missouri and marias rivers. 200 years ago this week, the corps of discovery spent a lot of time here trying to decide which river was the true missouri. lewis went up the fork which iis now the marias, and clark went up the fork whcih turned out to be the missouri. both captains independently came to the came conclusion that the fork taken by clark was the true missouri, even though every other member of the expedition was sure that the marias was. history bears out their decision. i have actually fished from the point on the left where the two rivers meet, and caught one HUGE carp there. i am sure there was some other good fishing there, but our trip was cut short. the island in the foreground is probably the same island where many of the expedition's supplies and one of the boats were cached while they crossed the rockies...... ![]() this is citadel rock, whcih was a familiar landmark to steamboat captains. it is also right in the middle of some of the most spectacular scenery on the missouri river. i have floated undeerneath this rock and it is an awesome site to see. ![]() |
