My neighbor shot a wolf Thursday, May 2nd where we hunted rockchucks during MYGAWDS 2018. I'll try to post the pic... Nope, too large.

Wow, If I remember right that was right up the road from the Mile High King Ranch.

That's a little close to home.

Interesting. Mt wolf population seems to be growing fast, about 900 now.  Time to get out thr calls, wolves are seldom loners.   was it a male?

The wolf population, as reported by MTFWP, is like grizzly, suspect at best. I bet numbers are at least double, of those reported. When they allow bait, for trappers and e-callers, for hunters, with season lasting more than six months and five tags available, you can bet number is higher than 900.

They used to list wolf depredation, of livestock and pets, they no longer track it, at least publicly.

Montana uses the POM system.

Recent population estimates — figures arrived at through a method known as patch occupancy modeling (POM) — peg Montana’s wolf population at about 850 animals statewide, with around 350 living in Region 1.

A RMEF  "Bugle" a few years back  had a detailed article of how POMs is used in Montana.  would you like a copy?  But I agree the 'estimates seem to come out 'politically correct'.
