I was going to say, the only one I've bought lately that didn't have lock with it was Bushmaster, but I then remembered, a few new rifles didn't have them. I think all the pistols/revolvers, I've bought in last five years, have had them infernal locks on them, I don't think they can slip, to the locked position though. Now back to the subject at hand, carry pistols. My daughter loves to shoot both my 38s, I've tried to give her, either one for carry, car, or for house, she doesn't want to carry "because she could never shoot anyone". She however will shoot the heck out of them, up to and including 1911, but doesn't want carry and be forced to shoot anyone. SIL carries and has house gun, she won't shoot either of them, she says they're too loud and scary. I told her that, if she won't use it, don't carry it. She may change her ideas on that now, that she has a little guy around to protect. She's ok with the fact, that SIL will use it for protection, if necessary, she just won't. Am I right about, if she won't use it, she shouldn't carry it? |

It has always been said don't pull a gun if you don't intend to shoot to protect yourself or others.....I guess the same could be said about the carry part.....You have to have your mind made up to shoot B4 you need to "pull the carry out"..... |

Carry weapons are great deterrents and confidence builders. But I certain agree don't pull it out till you have made up your mind to use it if necessary. Life is not a movie. As Clint and others on TV like to talk the bad guy to death. If you are up against a bad guy, especially if you are female, the other person is probably better able to take your gun away from you and use it on you or at least put it where the son doesn't shine. Any dangerous situation in which you might have violence, you should have been trying to back out of it way before you show a piece. Overall, I do not believe most people should carry CCW. they lack the skill and mental condition to properly use a weapon. I do know guys whose wives are nice people, but I wouldn't trust them with and electric carving knife or at an auto accident scene; they freak if the kid cuts his hand. When they ask what gun they should get their wives, i recommend mace/pepper spray. Remember these women are not in any dangerous condition or life style. The husband usually gets a 9mm!!! Everyone has the right to carry, many people just shouldn't. for them, it is safer to not carry. |

You hit it on the head Bear, but, in most cases just the known presence of a handgun with the victim is a deterrant. I say that because the NRA states that about 2 million crimes are deterred because the crook sees the gun and goes someplace else to ply his trade. Were it up to me, EVERYONE would be carrying, crooks and all. Much like the turn of the 19th century. Virtually everyone had a gun in their pocket. It didn't stop crime entirely, but society was more polite.....................................Kingpin Here's the edit: Locks on guns are a joke and probably thought up by well meaning shitheads. The best gun lock is, EDUCATION!!! Edited by Kingpin |

My daughter does carry pepper spray, she has since about fourth grade, bus stop was 1/2 mile away and she had to walk herself and sister to and from bus. She would leave it stashed at bus stop, while at school and retrieve it before walking home. It was more for the possibility of dogs, bears or mt lion, than for people. In winter kids have to walk to and from bus in dark and in winter mt lions are feeding on deer in area. In spring and fall, bears are in area, mostly blacks, but sometime griz. She decided to "test" spray one day, just a quick spray, she found out it stings, when wind blows mist back at you. She has never "tested" it again, but she still carries it and for her it's probably a better choice than CCW. I've suggested taser to her, she said it could be just as fatal as a gun, so she doesn't want one either. |

There was a news show sometime back and it was about pepper spray. They came to the conclusion that spraying an attacker with it pisses him off even more, for what it's worth. Keep in mind, you can't rape a .38..................Kingpin

"for what it's worth".........I don't think a tv news show is worth all that much......I know personally several people who have taken hits with the pepper type sprays in LEO training programs and they are convinced it is a deterrent....I put more stock in that type of first hand type of info/confirmation than most any tv news show. The idea is to hit the face hard/heavy to take out the vision/eyes and maybe affect the breathing, with the product to be effective. My 2cents worth.

You are exactly right Bear. My wife hasn't decided she will take another human life if nessassary. She doesn't carry. I on the other hand decided many years ago I have no problem taking the life of someone that intends on causing harm to me or any member of my family or anything I have worked my ass off my whole life for. No Hesitation. Wing master |

I've been maced and pepper sprayed, I would much rather be maced. I agree, you can continue fighting through either, if you have your adrenaline up. But you ain't getting "it" up, with a face full of pepper spray.

Personally, I don't put much stock on news shows either, but it WAS a small woman and the guy taking her purse was very big. His quote was, "She really pissed me off when she sprayed me, I wanted to beat the hell out of her." The demo was a controlled experiment, and the actors WERE police officers, so I can see where the doubt comes from. NOW!! That being said, if she had hit him with a .38, there would be no more talk about anyone beating anyone. For my money, I'll depend on a .38 and leave the pepper for seasoning or eating......................Kingpin

"That being said, if she had hit him with a .38, there would be no more talk about anyone beating anyone." What if she just took the 38 out and waved it around, because she didn't want to shoot him, would he just grab 38 from her or would he run away? The point I was trying to make was, if you ain't prepared to use it, leave it home. I know she wouldn't use it, so that's not an option for her, she would however use pepper spray and while it would not as effective as a 38, it would be better than nothing. |

That's a gimme Robert. I suppose she could also have worn her keys in her palm and used them as brass knuckles. I believe that carrying a gun is a personal thing. Stun guns work but the attacker has to be so close that it's iffy that you can get the thing into action. TASERS are light years better than any of the other stuff, not firearm related. Anything having to do with guns has got to be reenforced with practice, practice, practice. Did I mention practice?...........................Kingpin

Right on.....Practice is the KEY to carrying.....along with a predetermined mind set to shoot if you need to pull the piece......carrying is definitely not for everyone......

I've gone to a standard XS dot on my carry piece. Even my range pistol has a wide notch rear to accommodate my pukey peepers. The dot is fast. All you gotta do is line that baby up and the brain does the rest. I'll be going to the BIG Dot version with a couple more eye doctor appointments, I'm sure.
