probably carries easier because of the flat receiver, and no wood to wrap your hand around to keep hold of the rifle. part of what makes it handier, i would think.

i thought 'cast' and 'microgroove' were two peas that needed to stay in seperate pods?

Nope. Cast will work fine in multi-groove rifling. WW hardness will work fine, sizing is the killer. On a .308 barrel, look at starting at .310 for bullet diameter.

I've not had luck with cast in Microgroove barrels.  The marlin rep told me that the Microgroove barrel was made for cast!!!!!  not sure I agree with that one.  I've been playing with various case bullets in the 375 with Microgroove, without much success.  Drinksgin probably has it right, you need the correct cast bullet diameter, and the right velocity/hardness to get that cast slug to properly engage the Microgroove just right.  I've just not found that combination jet!!!!   But I intend to keep trying.   I had a similar problem getting the 44 mag to shoot cast bullets in the microgroove rifling on my carbine.  Be nice if someone would make a cast factory load for some of the lever guns.  Maybe the cowboy action crowd has something.

Bear, I've had several 30/30's over the years. Some do better with 150's
some with 170's. Only had one that bullet wt. didn't matter. Current 30/30
Marlin loves 170's. Will shoot su 2" groups of the bench with factory sights.
150's open out to 3.5".
For realy good info on cast bullets in micro grove bbls., go to Beartooth
bullets site.

Bear;
I had a problem with my .44mag. Handirifle, came with a .431 barrel, microgroove, 12 lands and grooves and I had no mold that would make larger than .430 bullets.
I got in on a plain base, .434-250 group buy, I add a gas check, cut a rabbet with my minilathe for it, use waterdropped wws, BHN 22-24, plenty of lube and a slower powder, IMR 4198 so as to get a slower pressure build up, size .433, velocity 1650fps.
Last try had 4 touching and 1, 1" high at 50 yds, really beats the 3-4" groups with .430 bullets and H110.

It has been months since I "played" with the 375 marlin. I slugged and miced the barrel.  Then got a local custom bullet caster to make me some  230 grain.  they look and load beautiful, they mic at .376 and are really hard cast.  I've been loading RL-7.  Maybe i need slower powder???

I really don't want or need a max load, actually I like a comfortable light accurate  load for deer.  I sort of thought that some upset of the rear of the bullet into the rifling was NEEDED.  Maybe I'll try lighter lower velocities.
