As I've said, been lots of eulogies for my hunting buddies.  But churned up a new hunting bud.  he is reformed duck hunter, turned bear hunter.  He got 6  blackies in PA, a feat, no baiting.  He likes my griz trophy, and wanted to go.  I helped him book a AK hunt and gave him a griz 101 clas, including shooting leasons.  His pennsylvania deer/bear hunting has been 75 yards as a long shot.  No, he hasn't mastered the sardine lunch technique.

Well he got a nice brown last fall, 30-06.

And last fall, he booked an interior AK griz hunt for june 10.  well virus hoax has been a dark shadow on the hunt.  so this wek he has had to get lots of testing for c-19 and doctors cleaance.  he still doesn't know if he will be able to enter AK.

But tomorrow, I pick him up at 7 am for the airport.  he has $$$ money paid and more on the line...and no guarantee he will do more than spend 2 weeks in a hotel.   sucks.  Must say Alaska Airlines which has daily flight out of here, has been great changing tickets/flights.

This virus hoax double sucks.

I'd be real surprised if he has any problems.

I think Alaska is a lot like Wyoming. We have mostly forgot about the virus here. I haven't seen anyone wearing a mask in over a week. We went out to lunch at Old Chicago today and the waitresses weren't even wearing masks.

Even the people that are required to do all these BS restrictions are going on about their lives without worrying about wearing masks, checking temperatures etc.

I wish him good luck and we will be waiting to hear about his trip.

So?  What was the outcome?  I kinda thought you might be BS'ing; ain't no such thing as a "reformed" duck hunter--only way to cure 'em is to drown 'em.  I did wanta get back to Alaska, first to work, and then later to hunt Grizz, but I struck out on both counts.  Got to see my bit of it while I was surveying for the pipeline, and the prettiest thing I EVER saw in the bush (other'n my wife, one day when she wuz skinny-dippin') wuz a big toklat-colored boar with the silver guard hairs just a-flowin' in the 11 PM sunshine as he stalked across a bright green tundra.  He wuz after a sow with 2 cubs she wuz about to get rid of.  'Twarn't the one that ate our D-8; that'n didn't have the silvertips, although he wuz big enough to bust down the doors to all our warmup shack/cargo containers and chase off a herc that wuz tryin' to land at Galbraith Lake, just north of us.
Whar i growed up "magnum" wuz anuther wurd fer "lousy hunter"

Well, I enjoyed griz hunting.  These are interior brown bears.   Unlike coastal brown bears that are hunted when salmon are in the streams; so bears are crowded in a know areas along the streams.  Interior bears can be anywhere, any time.  They still like to walk along streams, but also can be found in berries, etc.   For me much more of a hunt.

But to my friend.  He has killed a fair number of black bears in Pennsylvania (no bait).  He took a coastal  brown bear hunt last fall, got a 9 footer, with one shot from his '06.  So this was his second  AK bear hunt; also with his pump Rem 760 '06.  Lots of hurttles this time with cor virus.  Just 'bearly' made it in at the last minute.  that cost him 2 hunting days.  He had a good time....but saw no bears.  After 8 days of no bears, they broke the camp and moved 200 miles north.

On his coastal bear hunt he watched dozens of bears walk the river/beach.  This  time, his guide said, if you come back in November,  the guide would give him a free hunt if he just pays out of pocket for J-3 cub flights.  He is going, again.

I've hunted griz twice in Alaska, both times way north near the Arctic Circle.  I'd go again, but I figure evryone should just shoot one griz, 'cause there isn't enough for all to hunt unlimited.  So now I just look at my 9+ griz on the wall,  choclate legs and belly, with a beautiful gold/blond back and monster claws; one shot 210 yds running, heart with a 400 grain 416.

So hopefully he will have more of a story in the fall.

By the sounds of things over the past few years, the griz hunting has been more one sided to the griz being very successful at it. I mean sure, we have been baiting them with hippies and yuppies who tend to run and scream a little faster, but still, the have managed to get a few trophy real hunters as well.
