Hey guys, in a couple of weeks i am going to order my first muzzleloader. Its going to be the Cabelas Kentucky Rifle in percussion form. The rifle is sooo beautiful. I am going to use patch and ball on whitetails, and the Hornady Great Plains bullet on boar and Elk. I hope these combonations of projectiles are both dead on without having to change the sights. The gun is a .50 cal. New Hampshire has a 2 week muzzleloading deer season, so i will have it, and be accurate with it, well before deer season starts. If i like it enough, then i that may be my go to gun for all of my close quarters hunting.

nh- hunter check and see what the twist rate is. i goes something like this . 1-66 for round ball. 1-46 for conical bullets like the the great plans and 1-18 i think for sabots.  i shoot the 455 gr maxi hunter fron t/c out of my new englander. shoots great.

Hey Mr. Mom, the twist rate is the compromise 1:48. I have been reading a lot and the twist can shoot patch and ball and conicals well, but not sabots. I wasnt going to use sabots anyways.

nh-hunter : the only thing about the sabots is that it fouls the barrel more. you will have to scrub about every shot to get the next 1 in there.  next time i fire up the pot i wil make ya some. what caliber you getten?? i shoot 54 with a 455 gr. and the 50 mold is a 355 gr.  i make then for some of the people here.  when i do it i grease the bullet . then i wrap it with seliphane wrap and tie the off with thread. i keep them in a skoal can and keep my powder in little plastic contaners that drill bits come in. all mesured out. just dump it in and shove in the bullet.

one other thing you should look at in the muzzel loader is seeif it has a coil spring or a leaf spring.  cva have the leaf spring and they go weak t/c has a coil and no problems. my brother missed 3 deer because the hammer wouldnt go all the way because there was not snap in the leaf on his cva.
