My normal goose whacker is 37 gr Steel powder in a Fiocchi 3 1/2 hull,616 primer,Multi metal wad,1 1/2 oz steel shot ( 300 gr #1 or #2 and 356 gr #BB or #BBB) and a 6 point fold crimp. This is Death out to 50 yards+ with my 870 and factory full choke.
For this load I dropped to 36 gr steel powder and used #2X#BBB and rolled the crimp over a .060 clear plastic over shot card and used a bead of glue to keep it nice and dry. The listed speed for the fold crimp and 37 gr steel is around 1500 fps With the roll and glue I would think it would be about the same with 36 gr of steel. I haven't put it on paper yet but they Do look cool...

do the crimp/glue blow off a ragged edge of the case mouth.
When I did this 40 years ago on super magnums, the paper hull was only good for one reloading? |

Kinda! The roll crimp make you cut the case down by 3/8" so I don't re use them anyway. |

Years ago with paper I used some roll crimp; my shotgun shell reloader was a roll crimp model which I later converted to star crimp.
What is the advantage of the roll crimp in your reloads today?? |

Just a guess....Longer OAL.....more room for components (shot)...roll crimp uses less length of shell to form? Waiting for d to give us the real answer........... |

Very Good IBD. I can and do get a little bigger payload, not the reason. I trim the Case yes because it takes well over a 1/4 " of hull to make a fold crimp and only about 1/8" for a roll. The reason I'm messing with a roll crimp is it holds the pressure better and consistent. Like crimping a 45/70 brass ,or not. The fold crimp "Gives" faster and at different rates depending on "good''crimp bad crimp. AND I'm still working on slugs and they really have to be a roll crimp. |
