choke would be important but generally speaking if you want to equal #6 lead with steel go to #4 steel but that generally requires a more open choke ie IM or maybe IC type, good up to 35+yds. A general rule of thumb for lead to steel is go UP 2 sizes of steel from the lead you are trying to duplicate. It takes bigger steel pellets to equal lead pellets wt on pellet to pellet basis cuz the steel is much lighter wt than lead of same size..
Make sure your 16ga can handle steel shot first.....if it is an older/vintage model w F/C then I'd maybe not use steel at all. There is some steel shot out there that claims to be safe in older/vintage guns. Check the i-net to find it. |

It doesn't have a choke. I am not sure if or what a sweat 16 is stock either.
And from what I can tell there is no way to choke it. Do you guys think this gun would be ok to shoot steel out of? I know its old I just don't know how old |

Ok did a google search and it is coming up with "do not shoot steel out of it"
they do say however that its ok to shoot tungsten. I think I might just use my 12 gauge for this area and use the browning when not on the Habitat area. I would have never known guys I appreciate it. |

GOT said..."It doesn't have a choke."
what does that mean? How do you know there is no choke? Did you measure the bore opening at the end of the bbl? Or does it say on the bbl what the choke is or isn't? Or are you referring to an attached on the outside an adjustable type choke or internal threaded choke system or???? |

Bear no it didn't but I have heard that from a couple dif people. I don't really
buy it but I figured better to be safe then sorry. I'm sure you could in-lighted me if it's BS or has some truth to it. Irish that statement of mine really shows what I know about shotguns. I didn't know till after that post that they can come with a factory choke. I thought all chokes were screwed in....Like I said I just bought my first shotgun about a year ago...I guess browning Sweet 16 are marked with asterisk and different things to let the owner know what type of choke it is. Now I know and that probably sounded pretty dumb to you guys...lol...oh well I'm learnin is all I can say |

GOT14U, A sweet 16 is a very nice gun. More than likely with an open choke it may have been bought for skeet shooting. I certainly wouldn't put steel through it. Just a personal thing I guess. I've no grounds to say it's good or bad. Some of the other non tox loads might be all right but a lot of these can be loaded fairly heavy too. Whether that would be hard on the action? Again, I don't know but I wouldn't. I'd use it with some medium weight field loads where you can use lead and let it go at that. Some folks think they ought to load a sixteen with 1 1/8 oz loads and make a 12 out of it. Why not just use a 12? A 16 was known as a gentlemens gun in its time. Using 1 oz or even 7/8 oz loads was the norm. Like many things in life, great when used as designed, mediocre when pushed where it wasn't intended to go. JMO Rockydog BTW, Great article on light shotshell loads in this month's Handloader Magazine. |
