I just started doing some trap shooting at clubs on weekends. It's a lot of fun, but the fast pace really gets to my shoulder after a few events. The gun is a Rem 1100 auto and it has the OE plastic plate on it. I can't find very many direct fit for it and was wondering if anyone has a preference. The only ones I found are Remington R3 (which is made by Limb Saver?) and one from Pachmayr.

Any comments appreciated.

Is this a trap gun, or a field gun that your using fer trap?

If it's a field gun I'd put a pachmyer sporting clays pad on it, they have a rounded top that's smooth so it doesn't get hung while you shoulder it.  If it's a trap gun, and your serious, I'd put a morgan plate on it, and get a curved pad so you know it's shouldered the same way every time.

Just a field gun. I did get to feel a grind-to-fit Limb Saver and it was very nice feeling, like a silicone insert. How does the Pachmayer feel in comparison?

I fully concur with Spot on the sporting clays pad. They are expensive but they work well for trap, skeet, and hunting. There isn't a better pad anywhere for your purposes............Kingpin

Well, I ordered a Pachmayr Decelerator pad. Mainly because it was the only one anyone local could get that was a direct fit. I'll let you know what I think when it gets here.

Thanks for the tips, wish I could have made more use with them.

BK,

Fittin a pad is easy, and the smith's rip you off if they're chargin more than $30.  I put the new pad on, put tape around the base of the stock to protect it.  Then I use white paint, finger nail polish or what ever to mark the section of pad that needs to come off.  Take it to a bench and grind it down close to the line, keeping in mind the angle the stocks cut at.  then you put it back on the gun and finish with a sanding block.

My wife bought a shooting jacket from Cabellas for me. Shoot the 12ga and the 06 a long time now and it is great.

Spot,

I thought of getting one and grinding, but it is a very nice looking stock and I didn't want to be able to see the grind marks. I'm fine with paying $10-$15 more for one that is made to fit. It will look better than even a well ground pad IMO.

Hey BK, my expensive suggestion is getting a lower gauge shotgun! Try like a 20 or 28 guage, and then you will be all set. Of course it has to be made in Europe, preferably not French !

NH,

I want to have more fun, not woos out. Seriosly though, it has just a hard plastic butt plate and after a few rounds of trap it starts getting to you.Even a 20 with a hard plate would do the same.

I know, you don't really care, just adding up the points.

Eh, what would you know NH, they don't have a shotgun that's a lefty!

I'm ASSuming you mean Ruger's come with a pad? This was my granpa's gun that I got after he passed. No complaints, just want to be able to enjoy it.

Hey BK, The Ruger Red Label is ambidextrous! They also have fairly nice recoil pads. If the aught six is a little too much for me this year i am going to put on one of them Pachmayr Decelorators. I dont think it will be though. I could always load it down to about .308 velocities, and then i would have a .308!

NH,

What happens when you cycle that right handed shotgun as a left and the shell thwumps you in the face? Do you say SAVAGE a REMINGTON! (instead of son of a biatch?)

You say you don't like savages cause they is ugly? Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder. What about Remington?

Now whats wrong with golf? But anyways, Ruger hasnt made Big berthas since Calloway died. I wont buy remingtons because i just flat out dont like them! They switched over to a key system! and they made the 710!! I find this enough for me to hate them. Not only does it make the gun lawyer proof, it makes it dumby proof! What about all those guys who dont have a lot of money, love hunting, and arent that smart? WHat happens to the poor fools who buy the 710s? I have absolutely no idea whatsoever what this has to do with my hatetred of remingtons, but HMPH.

I'm not a huge Remington fan either. I've got a couple, and it's just the little things that bug me. Nothin major, but I probably won't buy a new one unless it's a killer deal.

I'm not sure I get your point on the 710 though.

BK, the decellerator pads are nice. If I remember correctly, they are made from Zorbathane (sp). This material really softens the recoil. I recommended the sporting clays pad because the top of the pad is hard rubber and allows you to slide it to your shoulder if you are shooting from "low gun." It costs about as much for a sporting clays pad as does the decellerator, but the choice is yours alone. Another thing to consider is, the length of pull. Depending on what this is for you, adding another inch to a stock could be a mistake if your stock is too long to begin with before adding anorher inch of pad. Take a little advice and go to a gunsmith to check the fit. Other than that, hold tight and squeeze............Kingpin
