Montana FWP Provides Grants For Trails
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks granted over $1 million in the past year to 37 different agencies and private organiza-tions to build and maintain trails in Montana. Another $1.1 million will be awarded this fall for trails projects. FWP administers the federal Recreational Trails Pro-gram, with oversight by the Federal Highway Administra-tion. Last year 16 new urban hiking and bicycle trails were com-pleted on city and county properties, and maintenance was done on portions of an- other 183 backcountry trails on federal lands. Urban trail pro-jects were funded in Big Sky, Billings, Havre, Libby, Ronan, Seeley Lake, Shelby, Town-send, Virginia City and White-fish. Backcountry projects included maintenance of horse, hiking and mountain bike trails and grooming of ski trails and snowmobile trails in most na-tional forests in Montana. A complete list of trails projects is available on the FWP web page at fwp.mt.gov under State Parks grant programs. To apply for Recreational Trails Program funds for late 2006 and 2007, go to the FWP web page at fwp.mt.gov. The application deadline is July 1. |
