Anyone paper patch .358 bullets for 9.3 mm guns? I am thinking of giving it a try, based on what I've read in my Lyman Book about .308 patching.
(Lots of .358 rifle molds, no decent non-custom 9.3 molds.) Anyone have much paper patch experience? Is there someplace this has already been answered? Thanks |

I paper patch some for the 45-70. It's not as easy as it might seem, and getting the same level of accuracy with paper patch doesn't come near as easy as with greasegrooves.

The most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

Might want to take alook at mountain molds, or nei handtools to see if they might have a mold you could live with.

Yes, I've paper patched cast 358 bullets for the 9.3x57. Used Lyman's 38009, 358318 and 358097 both with a gas check, and without. They all worked great using either WW's or lead. Also swaged some lead cast cores in C&H's two die .358 swaging set. Tried plain base, with a gas check and with a half jacket. Tried this because the swaging set had both a plain and hollow point nose punches. Again, worked great. Didn't really see a difference between any of the patched bullets listed for accuracy (and all were tried with full loads in that 9.3x57). If using pure lead, they expand very nicely, especially if using the HP swaged. Cast WW's did't expand for me, and did not work on deer. The cast pure lead did expand, and put deer down very quickly. Haven't done any patching since I acquired the Lyman mould (366408), both NEI's and a couple verisions from Mountain Molds. Was thinking of giving Old West Bullet Moulds a call and see what they have (not familiar with them and not sure if they have stock moulds, or all are custom). In my rifle, the patched was every bit as accurate as cast, but time consuming to make. Also, on the cast bullets board (link above), under "group buys" they're some guys trying to drum up some interest in a custom group buy for a 9.3 bullet (or two). If nothing else, the looks from fellow shooters when they see the paper patched rounds is worth it <grin>. Vern
