  • horses are among the most gifted of all animals. most of them have prodigious memories, and those who have worked much with horses on ranches and on wilderness pack trips say that when most horses are over a trail once they will remember it as long as they live and can follow it on the darkest night. in addition the horse has keen vision in daylight or darkness, excellent hearing, and a good sense of smell. i would guess, however, that in the scale of intelligence horses come well below dogs, cats and bears.

He's right. I've put my life in the hands of a few ponies on night rides in some scary places and they've never let me down.
