When i was younger i hiked into the back country in the Rocky Mountains about 3 hours west of where i live. A 20 km hike isnt as interesting as it once was..... Now we don't hike as far but still frequent the Mountains or the foothills.  Lots of trout streams and not a lot of people.

Ron, you are close enough to Augusta to go up on Benchmark.
It's out past Nilan Reservoir, which must be good fishing, from the amount of people I see there. The locals can point out the road to you, or there is a sign on the south end of Main Strret pointing the way. Follow the road out towards the front past the reservoir, until you come to Buddy Cobb's ranch entrance on the left. Go about another half mile, and go left. That is Benchmark. Beautiful country, good fishing.

Don't tell anyone else! Really!

My family likes Ft. Robinson State Park best.  Largest state owned park in Nebraska.  They got it all-horseback riding, swimming, nature trails, museums, crafts, all kinds of lodging and camping.  Plus lots of wildlife: antelope, muleys, buffalo, big horn sheep, and coyotes howling all night long.

Straight east of Lusk, Wyoming.  Straight south of Black Hills of South Dakota.
