Stock Painting,My Way

 Ok ya'all here's how I do it ,definetly not professonial by no means but it works for me.

 Things I need to get her going . Sandpaper or steelwool,masking tape a few tools for taking apart your rifle,primer (I use the same type they use on plastic auto bumpers,because it's somewhat flexible and tuff) paint I use Fleckstone by Plasti-kote,flat paint for the camo work I use Krylon and your choice of sealer. Fleckstone has it's own and I've used it some when I first started doing this and after a few seasons of gun cleaning the chemicals started doing a number on it in places,so I switched over to the Krylon matte finish clear just because it holds up better. I'll add a link at the bottom for Plasti-kote.

  I strip the stock of all hardware and wash the stock down really well with alcohol. I suppose you could get all fancy and get some degreaser but why,call me cheap.After a good sanding I really like using steelwool along with the sand paper ,it gets all the nooks and cranny's better. Then more alcohol,blow it all down good and hit it with a tack cloth to get any dust you missed.

 Now go ahead and do your masking,make sure you get every surface that makes contact with your gun,you don't want any paint getting in there and messing up your bedding or barrel channel. It will give you fits at the range if it's in the right spot.

 Now for the base coat or Fleckstone. I go in threes,three base coats with a day in between coats.Follow the directions on the can and if it were me I'd practice on something I didn't much care about. When you get the stone feel ya like your ready for the real thing.

  Here' where I go out in the yard and hunt for the foliage I like. I like evergreens the most but that's me,of course you can also make your own designs on heavy paper and use that. What the heck your idea of camo and mine may not be the same. Get your stock laid out where  you can make a mess without Momma having a fit and practice some and go for it.

 Lay out your foliage to your liking and go for it ,just go with light sprays you can always do more if ya want but it's always harder to start over.

 When you have the camo on the stock to your liking set it aside a few hours to a day till everything is good and dry. Then I hang the stock and go for the clear sealer,when I do this part it's a day per coat for 3 coats. That's just what works for me,like the Blind Faith song says,Do what ya like. But when your done and it's good and dry,put her back together and go hunting.

  I wanted to post a few others that I've done in different colors and that have been hunted hard with for a few years so you can see how well it holds up. The top rifles is another Winny and the one on the bottom is a Tikka. These guns are my hunt hard and nasty guns,they get dropped ,rained on left in the truck and bumped.

  To the guys who love wood sorry for the long post, but sometimes syn. come in nice and me I just can't do black. Sorry for  basics I know ya'all don't need  it from sratch but maybe some youngin's might want to give it a try.

Great post Tika, thanks.  I got a Remmy stock (black syn) my only syn stock..it will be this summers project.  Only hope it comes out as nice as your.

 Thanks guys I was hoping it wasn't to basic,I know you guys don't need all the stuff but I just thought what the heck.

 TJ I'm with you I'd much rather have wood,you just can't beat the look of a really fine grained peice of walnut,but when I take my prettys out here in the slop sure as heck I'll get a bad nick on it and even though thats what they are for it still makes me kick myself.

 It wouldn't really take that long maybe less than a week if I didn't count in my day per coat drying time,thats just the way I like to do it.

Excellant post there Tikka!  Thanks for the ideas and instructions.  May have to give it a try myself.  I've done it once but it was a bit different - more like the military style camo.
