Hey guys, just curious if any of you go ice fishing. I went for the first time last Tuesday and fell in love with it! I fished every day for the rest of the week except Friday. It was really fun runnign out across the ice trying to get to the tip-up first and then pulling up the fish! NH_Hunter |

n.h. be careful of running on the ice !!! i know a guy that fell hit his head and died 6 years ago. get some cleats for you boots. if you use big chubs for bait and they keep tripping the flag. chop a lillte of the tail off and scrape the scales up a little. pike like injurd bait. they will go after a hurt 1 faster than a well 1. also the bigger the bait the bigger the fish. in the winter big fish dont like to swim after a little fish. they want a meal to keep the body fat on. also when you get your bait from the shop put some snow or ice in the bucket . it helps them get use to being in the colder water. best bet is near a drop off. about 12 ft of water. we use gullet hooks. poke a hole under the baits skin and slide the leader threw and put the hook on. and slide the hook back till just the barbs are sticking out. and when the flag goes off DONT set the hook. let them run with it. most times they will drop it after they first hit it to wound it. then they will come back and pick it up to eat it. then set the hook , and take your time bringing it in. dont be afraid getting your hands wet and grab it just as the head comes to the hole.

We have been using shiners for bait, nothing bigger to use that we know of. I do have some of the cleats, i got them from the bait shop for 6 bucks. My friend tried to use a needle to thread through the bait's back but he didnt have a big enough needle. We do let the fish take the line, i just posted that msg quickly. NH_Hunter |

NH--Sounds like your'e on the right track. Mr Mom is givin ya good advive. Watch the ice!!!!! Never take any kind of vehicle onto the ice. Have been around it a long time (since the early 50's). Lake DeSmit north of Buffalo, Wyo has quite an assortment of stuff laying on the bottom (outboards, boats, snow machines, and a few tricked out Chevy Suburbans) Be safe, keep your ducks in row, and you'll enjoy the heck out of it. World's record Walleye takin through the ice was out of Boysen Res. (Shoshoni, Wyo--17+ lbs) Enjoy Bronco |

My friend once caught a fish that was so big it couldnt fit through an 8" auger hole in some lake in Vermont! He knows that lake like the back of his hand and i am begging him to bring me up there! He has a 10" auger so we shouldnt have to worry unless that fish is still around and has gotten bigger NH_Hunter |

Thay are the greatest sport fish we have!!! there is nothing like tying in to a25lbs carp. Pound for pound thay are like hoking on to a gray hound bus sidewase!!!!LOVE IT !!!

d4570 : your a good man. we shoot them with our bows and fish for them just about all year long. nothing like hooking a big hog with an ultra light or a 12 ft steelhead rod. we have seen and talked to some german guys that come to michigan every year anf fish for them. the do catch and release after the take pics. you should see the gear they use. they have tote bags full of custom carp bait they bring with. i asked about some of their gear and their sinkers they use are like 9 bucks u.s. they even had a magazine with them called mine carp. nothing but big ass carp pics in it. my biggest is 31 # shot him with my bow and he drug the boat with me and my buddy in it.

moose: its a bitch to troll for them with ice. you have to cut a loooooooong hole to get a good run. but alot of guys get tangled up when they have to turn and go the other way. nad it dosent help when the ice is 46 inches thick.
