As a south paw myself I was intrigued to see this section of the forum for discussion of leftie "stuff"... very cool. Here's my confession, though.... I only own right handed bolt rifles. Just never seen the need for a leftie bolt....

Sir North; The question is; not which is the dominant hand, but which is the dominant eye. I suspect that your master eye is the right one if you're shooting off the right shoulder. If your master eye is the left, and you're shooting off the left shoulder with right hand bolts, you're only handicapping yourself. Or does your idea of a fun night of bowling involve seeing how many times you can drop the ball on your foot? In which case, you're a masochist.

I'm right handed & left eyed, shoot off the left shoulder, and I don't own a single left handed bolt rifle. I shoot a hand gun right handed. So maybe I'm not supposed to be on this section!? The choice of left handed bolt guns is limited, although better today than 40 years ago when I started shooting. For the sake of consistency, I stick with RH bolt guns. I really don't want to have one routine for shooting my 721 or NRA Sporter, then switch over to another for a modern bolt. If follow up shots are important I guarantee that off a rest I can get those shots off fast. My right hand is on the bolt when the left presses the trigger. This is great for lighter recoiling guns & varmint shooting. But I admit, off hand follow ups are tougher. |

Left eye dominant. Shoulder on the left shoulder. Right handed bolt isn't a problem... you only 'need' one shot anyway. Repeats [if necessary] have never been a problem.
The only 'bowling' I'm into involves knocking down pins with a .45ACP...

I have just recently gotten a couple of LH bolt action rifles. I have found that for me, when shooting off a bipod or rest that I prefer a RH bolt. It allows me to keep my strong hand on the rifle and work the bolt with the weak. Perhaps it is because that was how I learned (using RH bolts) it now feels natural to me to shoot with them. If not using a rest (bipod) I find I like the LH bolt better.
No wonder us lefties are thought to be so confused....we are!

Lefthanded shooters are confused by trying to adapt to righthanded arms. If you've learned to shoot with a righthanded action, it will obviously feel better to you. That doesn't make it any less ridiculous. Righthanded people are just are not faced with the problem.
A person with a stronger left eye will be more accurate shooting off the left shoulder. It is much easier and more efficient to maintain the sight picture and work the action with weak arm on the forearm. This is pretty basic stuff. Having learned to do things the wrong way is simply a handicap you have to work to overcome. For example, I own only lefthanded or ambidextrous guns. Even the lefthanded bolt actions have an ambidextrous safety. I practice shooting both left and right handed, because it is sometimes necessary for hunting. Right handed feels somewhat awkward, but the more I practice the more it feels natural. |
