Topic: Tell Me about the 16 gauge Posted: 08 November 2003 at 10:09 |

Ok guys, do your preachin'. Is it true that they kick like a 20 but hit like a 12? Or is it the other way around? My dad is just about to buy a Sears and Robuck J.C. Higgens model 1017 in 16 gauge and i was just wondering about it.

I have 2, 16 guage shotguns. I really like them. I dont think recoil from a 12 is that bad but the 16 will knock a pheasant down with authority. Mine are a Remington model 11, and an old Savage Stevens side by side.
By the way a 20 guage shoots the same size shot at the same speed. Their is just a shorter shot string with a 20 guage.

handle a 16 on a 16 size frame or a 20 frame and you will never consider a 12 or a 20 again short of pass shooting on waterfowl,,the Euros really know how to make a great handleing 16 s/s,,and a 1 oz. load is perfect for 90% of shotgunning,,,most old american singles and boltguns are stocked wrong for good gunning,,,,THE STOCK FIT IS THE THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!imho

I like the 16 guage. It is "tweener", not a 12 not a 20. I have singles and pump hunting shotguns in this caliber.
The big value to the guage is it was once very popular and every quality shotgun made was offered in the 16 bore. today it is not popular at all.
So if you want a classic Browning O/u, or a model 12,or a model 21, or an auto 5, etc you will save hundreds of dollars on the used 16, WHICH is every bit as good a shotgun for upland game.
With the advent of the 20 guage 3 inch shell, the 20 is more versitile. Remington is making a 16 guage 870, and I love the 870 and the 16; but I bought a 20 ga super light weight 20 ga 870 last year.

the ithica 37 is again offered in 16,,along with a lot of imports,,Steoger uplander (Bennelli )Tristar (Rizzini ),,and the EAA imports are very good ,,,,and cheap,,field grade and 'clays models come in 16,,o/u's and s/s's and singles,,,and now that great Itlalian B&P ammo is in the states in 16ga...............the 1 oz. load in 16 works like a 1 1/4 oz. load in the 12................goooooood shootin'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
