Hey all of you bird hunters out there, i was wondering what is the best 20 guage grouse load? The only loads i have used so far are Remington Express size 6 shot. I dont have any experience with any other shotshell company or load so i was wondering what you guys thought.

NH hunter,

Winchester also makes a heavy field load. It uses a high brass hull and I dont think the grouse will care if you use it or the Remington field loads. They both will work well.

I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

NH;

My personal opinion is that #6's are a little heavy for grouse.  There are a lot of loads in #7 & 7.5 in either Rem Fed or Win that'll work.  The shooting is usually fast & close so a modified or improved cyl choke & a lot of smaller pellets works for me.   IMHO you don't really need high velocity loads as most shots are 20 yards or less.

Just keep in mind that the conditions here in the Rocky Mtn West may be different enough that what works here may not there.  Also, we have the option of using a rifle on most upland bird (pheasents excluded).  Most use a .22lr on fool hens.  The one where you'd have to pick them up & throw them to get them into the air.  They will literally let you walk up & touch them.

NH,

   Got my login name cause I shot too many of them buggerin grouse when I was a kid - I'm thinkin your talkin about ruffed grouse.

  Anyway, 7 1/2 shot is the way to go, get winchester super-x high vel.  highest dram load you can get.  You need a fast round, you ain't gonna have long to shot, and will end up spot shootin unless you have a good pointer.  Even then you end up spot shootin more than half the time.

Hey Spot, what is the advantage of 7 1/2 over 6? I usually use 6 because that is what my dad buys. Always Remington Express except for his 28 guage which he buys federal.

NH;

With 7.5's over 6's you get two advantages on grouse.  1.  Higher pellet count per shell.  2. Less meat damage.

Keep in mind that this is very dependent upon the game bird you are hunting.  7.5's retain less downrange energy & therefore aren't the load to use when pass shooting waterfowl.  Also, you can use lead for upland bird & have to use non-lead for waterfowl.  Good non-lead loads = $$.

I wasn't going to answer this, but I see Spot's missed it.

Thank you CB. I figured on the higher pellet count, but never really thought about meat damage. Guess i got a lot to learn

cb, the other night, I was looking through some stuff I have piled up and ran across a case of Remington International 12 ga skeet loads that I bought a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away. They are 8 1/2 shot high brass. I remember why they are "in storage" now. I bought them for  dove hunting. When I killed the first dove with one, it kind of looked like those frames you see on the History Channel when a guided missile hits a jet fighter. The dove exploded in the sky and fell in pieces. I immediatly switched them for the Winchester AA #9's. I rather enjoy eating dove, and less enjoy looking for parts. Have you ever tried the Intl. Skeet loads?..............Kingpin
