I've been working on my Stevens SxS "gift gun". Tonight I stripped down the receiver. Broken left hand firing pin. Broken RH hammer. Neither of these looks too complicated to make. Numrich has no parts. What grade of steel do I need to make these out of? The firing pin looks to be about .25 in Diameter with a notch to hold the pin retaining screw. How hard are these? Can I file off the broken pin, drill and tap a hole in the .25 base and thread in a grade 5 or 8 1/16" screw with head removed to make the pin? Or can I simply have one turned from drill rod? How hard should the hammer be? Mine broke the ears off where the cocking bar is pinned to the hammer. Hammer is almost square with a slot milled for a stirrup into which the cocking bar is pinned. The other hammer is fine except for some peening where it hits the pin. BTW the pins have no retracting springs. I can't see what keeps the barrel from snapping them off on opening or closing. RD
