The firearms industry is rapidly changing.  not for the better.

Beautiful walnut has gone to SYN plastic.  machined parts have gone to plastic or stampings.  no quality in design nor manufacture.

Guns today have to be:
combat designed,
Synthetic,
modular
look aggressive,
be painted, lack any finish.

so while some used rifles are available; I suggest one should buy a Marlin 335 in 30-30.  walnut, reliable, fun to shoot.  No longer made (owned by S&W) except in a combat ready model..ugly.

Wing saw what sucked me in on a used gun rack...Kimber classic with xxxwalnur

That Kimber is a beautiful rifle.
I have seen the new Marlins with the plastic stock and the forend with the scope rail. I wondered how anyone could totally screw up such a classic design.

I've had this rifle for a long time. I don't shoot it all that often but since you brought it up I think I'll get it out and run a few rounds through it. I have been meaning to put it in the camper to have when we are in the mountains.
Any suggestion for a load for 30-30? I have a bunch of brass but never have loaded 30-30.
I have always considered myself to be quite the bullshitter, But ocasionally it is nice to sit back and listen to a true professional......So, Carry on.

Hornady has a 30 Cal .308 160 gr FTX® (30‑30 Win).

This should be ideal, nice BC and  at 160 gr it gives a little more velocity than traditional 170 gr.

I load a lot of 30-30 bullets for deer in 308, and 30-40 Krag.  real good killers on deer.

another option is loading  110 grain M1 carbine bullets, they are round nose  and make nice varmint rounds.

Thanks Bear.

I'll look for the Hornady's. I don't think I'll ever use it as a varmint gun but I guess you never know. I have always said that it doesn't matter what I'm hunting, If I see a coyote it turns into a coyote hunt.

Hard to beat a "traditional" Marlin 336! Mine a 30-30 chambering & even has pretty decent wood but then it's from the "old school" versions.....I too am from the "old school" versions!Wink

I agree IBD, They are classic.

Does any of you know the reason they put a safety on the new Marlins? I think they have them on most if not all new leverguns. Not just Marlin.

In my opinion they are ugly and very much un necessary.
