Seems 20 years ago they were promoting 30mm tubes on scopes, and charging a premium for them.  Leopold and other American makers campaigned against the 30mm, showing there was no optical advantage to the European metric standard.  After 1o years even Leupold gave up and just started making some 30mm scopes.

But eventually the sales of 30mm tanked, and fewer scopes were offered in 30mm tubes.

Now, again, I see a surge in 30mm offerings.  What's up!!

I think of it the same way I think of some of the new cartridges they come out with.

Most people already have a rifle with a scope on it. This doesn't create new sales.

Then, a new fad comes out, like long range hunting. Your old 30-06 with a Vari-XIII couldn't possibly be good enough for that. So the gun writers start writing about the new 6.5 wizz bang cartridge and people start thinking they can't hunt without it. Then, the same writer writes about the new scope with a 30mm tube. You can dial 5 more minutes of elevation with this new high dollar scope. If you buy this you can now successfully hunt any game animal from a half mile away.

Look at all of the new sales they made. A new rifle, a new scope, and you can't use those old fashioned 1 inch rings so you have to buy a new set of 30mm rings that cost more than the 1 inch rings.

They are good salesmen and yes people are gullable.

Just my opinion.

I swapped my 2x7x33 1" tube for a 1x6x42 30mm tube a few years back specifically for evening low light.  I found that I get a few more minutes of shooting time that has made it worth the trade.  It's a Burris with the MTAC reticle that I could do without but I can't complain.  It puts me closer to the end of legal hunting time at 30 minutes after sunset when I'm in timber.  FWIW.  788

I don't know how big the objective is but their is some long range guys around here that have scopes with a 34 mm tube. Those things are massive.
